Especially counting down the last 90 seconds, judging when to place my final bid, seeing if my high bid is high enough. I don't gamble, but I think this auction rush must be similar to the excitement people get from Vegas or Atlantic City. Anyway, I got this feeling during this month's ComicLink auction. The story starts with last month's NYCC. I was trying to buy this 1.8 copy of CDNP 24. The dealer's price was $2000 and he was firm. I offered $1800 but the dealer wasn't considering any offers. I was actually tempted to take it for $2000, because this book is high on my want list and it's not offered very often. But by the end of the con I'd spent too much money on other things, so I couldn't justify paying high for this book. Fast forward to this month's C-Link auction. This restored CDNP 24 was being offered. I don't mind restoration, especially a little glue or color touch. I realize from an investment point of view, the blue 1.8 has a higher ceiling than the purple 2.0. But I'm a collector not an investor, and CDNP 24 with the classic face burning cover was high on my want list. Comparing the 1.8 to the 2.0, the 1.8 has major spine flaws. Otherwise though the 2 books are comparable. Except the 2.0 has a little glue on the spine (resulting in the purple label). So, I decided to go after the R2.0, but still I was concerned about FMV given the restoration. I wasn't willing to pay $1800 (my offer for the 1.8) for the restored 2.0. At the end of the day, I got the restored 2.0 for $1600 (my high bid). I had one other win -- this Bobby Benson 14. I got it for $282. So essentially, I got both the CDNP 24 RCGC 2.0 and the Bobby Benson 14 for about the same price I was willing to pay for the CDNP 24 1.8. At this moment, there are 17 books in the collection. The average grade is 9.4, and the average cost has been $104. Most of the books are from 1971-1974, which is the sweet spot for this gothic theme of the pretty girl in a flowing white gown. There are 2 from 1980 and 1 from 1982. Of the 3 new additions, I especially like this Swamp Thing Annual, as it's signed by Adrienne Barbeau who was Alice Cable in the Swamp Thing movie. I have a few versions of this photo. Here's one signed by Stan the Man. Here's a SDCC promo book. I think I got this in the mail. It still amazes me it went through that journey (in a manila envelope with no padding) and came back as 9.8. Finally, a version signed by Emma Stone. It's the most I've ever paid for a SS book.
