I have to admit that I am continually impressed with the prices being realized on Bakers.  But I then look at the prices on silver and golden age and then the prices don’t seem so outlandish.

The great news is that we live in a democracy and we can all vote with our wallets as we are the ultimate arbiters of value.  Sure there are outliers and many will feel regret about missed opportunities and overzealous bidding.  But when I look at other hobbies like baseball cards, stamps and coins, comic collecting is without a doubt the best hobby around!

I don’t think the Baker growth is a passing trend.  I thought it was 6 months ago but I think I was wrong. It is just gaining momentum.

Up until 5-6 months ago or so when you would see a Baker book go high on eBay it was always 2 or at the most 3 guys significantly higher than everyone else.  Now there are 4 or 5 people battling at the end. The book that went for $1313 had 5 unique bidders above $900. This shows a lot more healthy interest and it is not waning.

As more graded books are sold on gpa reporting sites you will see the growth continue.  I have been trying to buy back many St John books I sold in the past but they are locked down.

I am sure there will be a stagnation of growth at some point in the not too distant future but I don’t see a reversion coming.

Took the buyout two years ago, but still writing two Sunday columns every month.

Good for you!  My parents were both Guard employees for years, and although I live in SF now, I still read the Guard and Oregonian.  Most of my favorite writers (and many of our family friends) are long gone - some to PR jobs or politics and many others to retirement.

Bakers Are Too Expensive So Now What?

With Matt Baker being so expensive, I've turned my attention to other comics.  Here are a few higher grade GA romance comics I've picked up lately.   I think some of these approach Baker, especially First Love 34 and Love Problems 28.  I got these 5 all for way less than even a single Baker.

Those are 5 nice books. :applause:

Were there Harvey file copies on these titles?

Some of them were advertised as file copies.  But when I received them they came with no authentication.  So I'm not sure how I can prove they are file copies.

Of the 30 or so Harvey's I've bought raw advertised as file copies none came with any authentication so it seems to my like people just call any high grade ones file copies.  I've bought a few slabbed ones off HA that say file copy on the label, I presume these are the Geppi warehouse copies.  None of these have come with any kind of certificate either.

I think you might be right. I bought a lot of the Harvey file copies from Sparkle City Comics and Geppi so I know their origins but these days you are relying on very loose backgrounds in some cases which might be more guessing.

Welcome to the club... haven’t noticed a lot of other people posting Harvey’s but I’ve been after high grade copies for a while.  There are some great classic covers imo and I’ve come to especially love the Al Avison covers like FLI 13.

Aside from the ones with good covers, the Harvey romances tend to have better interior stories than other romance publishers.  All you have to do is look at how many Harvey romances get OPG citations for salacious stories on the inside... First love 3 and 13... True Love Problems 14 And 24...Hi-School romance 32... etc.

Gonna give myself a pat on the back here but I actually contacted CGC about getting these OPG citations on their labels for several of these issues and they kindly acquiesced.

I also think FLI 12 is a classic.

And the covers are certainly intriguing enough that they make you want to read the story.  Here's another example.

Lee Elias was good, but he'll never be close to Matt Baker.

No argument from me on this point.  But I'm the kind of collector who would rather get a stack of comics rather than just a couple.  Baker is getting so expensive he's not as much fun to collect anymore.  So I guess I'll live vicariously through others as to Bakers, and turn my collecting attention to other things.
