Per Deadline, the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom box office has added an additional $80.1 million in 73 international markets, nearly tripling its domestic opening weekend and claiming the No. 1 spot worldwide. Those markets include China, where it had the biggest opening for a 2023 superhero movie. Its 3-day global opening weekend total is now a much more substantial $107.7 million, though it hasn't yet earned back its production budget of more than $200 million.

The Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom release comes during a time when big-budget superhero movies are generally experiencing diminishing returns. This has especially been the case for the DC franchise, which is transitioning into the soft reboot known as the DC Universe, but it has held true for the rival Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. However, Aquaman's international results are tracking well ahead of certain recent flops in both franchises. Check out how far ahead of select previous superhero movies the movie is in like-for-like markets below, per Deadline:

Despite negative reviews and the possible Aquaman 3 being cast into doubt, Aquaman 2 is tracking considerably ahead of The Marvels, which posted the MCU's worst-ever opening weekend this November. It has still fallen behind the MCU's other two titles from 2023, however. Those are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which had a global opening of $282.1 million, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which had $225 million. It could nevertheless pull ahead of Ant-Man, which had the worst week 2 drop of the entire franchise before The Marvels broke its record later in the year.

:roflmao: after New Year's Day it will be 60% behind Aquaman over the same time frame, no math on earth can get this anywhere near $225M US #mathishard

How to Lie With Statistics, an example.

Pretend the calendar doesn't exist.

Publish international results for a film released during Christmas / New Year's week - and compare those seemingly robust weekday results to those of films that were released outside the holiday season, and then brag about how the former film is outpacing the others.

Put another way, basically no chance the international take for this ultimately matches Black Adam's $225 million.

the vast majority of these box office 'gurus' are cheerleaders not reporters. the deadline guy may be the worst. he's trumpeting X-Mas week being above last year ignoring that US BO in December will be below December 2000 when average ticket prices were 60% lower.

Having actually watched this movie, I can see this riding between 6.0 to 7.0 on average. Which is where a large portion of the IMDb users are falling with this one.

IMDb user ratings are still in the mode range of 6.0 to 7.0, though the overall mean is still riding 6.0/10.

I think people are comparing the two franchises and their reception, but there's something I feel like saying

Aquaman is the lame duck last movie in a series that lost a lot of appeal when Gunn came along and said "That's all, Folks!" On the other hand,The Marvels was marketed as the beginning of a new direction for Marvel and the resurgence of Brie Marvel as the new leader of the avengers. We'll see who "wins". Will Marvel bounce back and make another slate of first rate films? Will Gunn bring fresh life to DC? Only time will tell.

This Variety piece is worth reading.

It goes to what I wrote above, about Aquaman's failure not being specific to the film (or Warner Bros.) itself, but rather superhero fatigue more generally.

Although this author's point can be summarized as "Bring back the A-list characters," he does a good job of reviewing the evolution and cultural impact of comic book TV shows and movies from the 1960s (Batman TV show) to present.

Only losers when you are talking about those two movies.  The recent John Wicks numbers look fantastic compared to those two duds.
