I don't think it was a spine split. I think just wear. Or maybe a production defect.

Woulda helped to see a side view of the book.

Oh its a spine split-you can see the piece of separated cover flap off to the left.

 I had a hard time telling where it stopped and started (vertically). I assumed the worst and assumed it was torn most of (if not all) the way.
