The first layoffs have started and will be effective March 1st.  The divisions getting hit the hardest are human resources (under various names) and DEI divisions. There were several articles detailing this last week.

At this point, ESPN and the Parks are subsidizing the entertainment and content divisions. Other then human resources, entertainment and content creation is where the vast majority of the cuts will occur.

Disney workforce cuts to affect all company divisions, including theme parks

Quote

Job cuts at The Walt Disney Company will affect every division, including theme parks, Spectrum News 13 in Florida reports. However, hourly frontline operations positions aren’t expected to be included. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Wednesday that 7,000 jobs, representing around 3% of the company’s workforce, would be slashed. The reduction comes as Disney enacts a company-wide plan to save $5.5 billion in costs.

The HR thing early February was guesstimations. Iger has confirmed the only parts of the 200K (+) employee base off limits is the hourly workers.

I know, but was just pointing out where it was starting, and has been confirmed to have layoffs. HR across all divisions will still likely take the biggest hit.  The reason is HR does not make money in a direct sense like other employees do.

Who do you think runs the corporate compliance programs each salaried employee is required to take to keep the regulators at bay, along with performance programs, pay, benefits management and planning those layoffs?

HR not being a revenue-generating department makes up for this through other key functional activities. Recruiting is where the HR hits would occur, which is a much smaller area. And at times outsourced to third-party specialists.

Interesting stuff...

There's no way that this quote:

"“The strategy to collapse all windows, starve linear [television] and theatrical [box office] and spend money with abandon, while making a fraction in return, all in the service of growing sub numbers, has ultimately proven, in our view, to be deeply flawed,” Zaslav said last week."

... could be the actual strategy. That's not what was planned, so they need to figure out what happened between their projections and what occurred. It was never a "strategy" to "spend money with abandon", so the rest of the statements by this person are pretty suspect.

This quote:

Average revenue per user for Disney+, a key measure for streaming, fell 5% to $5.96 because of the strong value of the U.S. dollar.

... does line up pretty well with the $6.25 estimate needed for $1Billion in revenue per month for 160million subscribers, especially if you put that 5% back in (to get to the prior number, it was $6.25).

It's the operational cost (especially the content cost) that kills the thrill of in-sourcing streaming. How Netflix dominated for so long yet in recent years struggled is interesting.

The initial Disney+ Premiere Access fee seemed like a smart play to start down the right profitability path. But then the marketing to gain traction ends up being a 100% direct cost versus sharing the burden with theater providers.

I wonder if we will see even more consolidation for those not having substantial alternatives (theme parks, resorts, large-scale merchandising)?

Think more release date changes are coming. Almost half the projects doe 2023 have been pushed, so when are they going to admit, they are going to push other stuff to make room?  Also, with QM underperformed, are more rewrites incoming?

Please tell me - in very small words - what possible reason do I have to go to the movie theater with Mrs. Donut and drop $50 with to see Ant-Man?

I go for 'the experience'. The experience hasn't been what it used to be, though, since very few movies end up feeling worth it.

I genuinely enjoy going to sit in a dark theater and eat theater popcorn for an evening.  It's getting so expensive that I'm having a tough time justifying the cost for most movies but I usually find one a month that is worth it.

Umm...

You made my point.

Even with all that, it *still* dropped harder than BvS.

Means that Quantumania must *really* be dookie.

What is telling is how much you repeatedly mention BVS throughout the years. Which clearly demonstrates you are coming around.

Give it a few more visits to 'the clinic'. It will happen.

Crazy how theaters become a major expense, even if by yourself let alone with a group.

Now with some theaters toying with added expense if you want decent seats. The closer it gets to theaters changing drastically.
