As well as pottering about with comics I find it therapeutic to scan spines to remind myself what I didn't know I owned.

Also to be found in these reprint titles from the 1950s were the ads from Ellisdons.

Here is one of their catalogues from the early 1970s.

All you could ever want in the way of stink bombs, X-Ray goggles, card tricks and whatever else would make you the life and soul of your corner of the playground.

Send your pocket money today! Don't waste it on rubbishy American comics, they are only a fad  that you will soon grow out of.

For a few weeks during the summer of 1974 Ethel and Gladys had a reduced workload as all Charltons were pre-priced. This was handy as Ethel, hubby and the twins had a week in Skegness planned. The shop on the Caravan site only operated in-season so was beyond the reach of T&P reps. It was however well stocked with Alan's dateless fare. Alas it was a period when Daredevil or Spider-Man no longer featured. All current titles mostly featured "boring" mid 1950s Atlas "horror". Still, even an Alan Class comic was preferable to yet another game of snakes and ladders as the twins looked out on a rainswept Caravan site. Once back at work Ethel found the UK priced Charltons were now the wrong price anyway and needed 8p stickers on them. The following month it was back to the trusty old ink stamps.

Out of curiosity how much does a Superman 175 sell for in Sao Paulo? If postage isn't too prohibitive perhaps you could get one from eBay UK for a few £££s. Although perhaps the rare 2 cent variant is considered valuable :)  PS: I just now bought this in the UK for £9 including postage when I realised I didn't currently own a copy (although I had once purchased that comic brand new after spinning a Thorpe and Porter spinner rack for 10 minutes trying to decide which comic I should buy with the lone 1/- coin clutched firmly in my hand)

Actually, it was in Rio. This singular Superman was the most expensive US comic of the auction. Assuming it was bought right after the auction's end, during the Christmas Holiday, the buyer paid +- £29 for it. But I wouldn't say there is any strong pattern on the prices of US comics sold here. A non stamped one was sold by less than 3.50£:)

About shipping from the UK, I normally would assume that the international shipping cost would neutralize any posible savings. What is the bare minimum Royal mail would charge to ship a single comic to Brazil?

You probably won't be surprised to hear it's Guaraná Antarctica.  I imagine this advert got a different reaction in Argentina to the one it got in Brazil.

However, Coke in Brazil did pioneer the re-useable bottles which have (they tell us) reduced single use plastic bottles by 90%. I can't understand why they haven't rolled that out globally.

I didnt remember that commercial.  Many, many years since I last saw it  :)

Anyway, I was not aware about single use plastic bottles, but I assume it was before my time or perhaps during my younger years. What I do remember is widespread use of Glass bottles that were soon supressed by the recyclable  plastic ones. Some say the coke taste better on them.

On another matter that has nothing to do with the above or anything at all......I have found a few TV Tornados and thought how interesting they were with their unique content of text stories. The painted covers are fun.

Looks like Mick Anglo did the spot illustrations for both the Batman and Superman text stories, as well as editing the magazine. I wonder if Douglas Enefer wrote the Batman text story, as he had done for the eleven issues of the Batman digest from World Distributors in the summer of 1967.

Good spot Kev. Later reprints date it at 1955, before my area of interest, but I'll see if I can snag it :wishluck:

Who could blame this poor little waif, once she had reached the required minimum age, from hiking to Oadby, just so she could get her fix.

She told Fred she would work for quarter pay as long as he would set aside a couple of hours a day for her to lock herself in the ladies with a stack of the grisliest items from the last delivery.

Alas, her well-thumbed collection when she passed away was dispersed among the bin men who cleared out her garret.

Ethel, the forewoman in the stamping department, renamed herself in her honour (probably).

I believe I have mentioned George Pumphrey previously in this thread.

He was taken on board as a mouthpiece for an anti-comic crusading organisation, who were, unknown to George at the time, a Marxist front.

Will dig out chapter and verse later.

Last year I bumped into a chap at a local fair who was researching this period for his PhD. Wish I had taken his details, he may have made discoveries of value to us.
