Popular Post bc
46 minutes ago, Randall Ries said: Yeah. IMO, they are. Just because one CAN do something doesn't mean one should. If you have a book from the most famous pedigree in the world, why would you crack it out? Just so you can read it because "that's what comics are meant for"? Ridiculous. Think...oh I don't know...if you are Hell bent on reading the issue, why not look for a digital copy or a rat to read? There are only steps down from egomaniac in that case. I was being kind. Fool comes to mind. Also, apathetic. Also no regard for rarity or history because I have a lot of money and can do what I damned well please. The comment was made that the particular book isn't going to stay in that shape cracked out. People are gonna fawn over it and handle it. Damage WILL be done. But wait! They kept the CGC label! So, when it's sell time, they will have that as PROOF it's part of the Mile High club. So, if it was graded 9.6 and now it looks like a 9.2, bet they will try to sell it as a Mile High 9.6 book. Which it no longer is. And if they DO sell, the buyer may want to resub it and he paid a 9.6 Mile High price for a 9.2 MAYBE Mile High. Now, you have a raw book. If there are no markings to show it's a Mile High, then it ISN'T a Mile High. I can see "what all the fuss is about" through the front window of a case. A pedigree such as a Mile High designation ought to be kept as safe as possible. Busting out your rare, pristine book just to read is stupid. Really? I buy an 8.0 Bat 1 and first thing I'm doing is breaking it out to read it? Really? Can't find a reprint anywhere? Really? Only other reason to do that is ego and a shade of obstinance and radicalism. Also, if you have an Action 1, I will pay you Bob Colt prices for it. Since - as you say - there is no difference. I agree, they are worth protecting. I know how to handle a comic book though. I’m not going to read it on the john like another one of our esteemed board members. And yeah, let me PM you my PP addy. This confounds me. I can’t even tell the difference usually and 9.8s are consistently double the price. It seems like either 9.8’s are vastly overpriced or 9.6’s are vastly underpriced. Only other reason to do that is ego and a shade of obstinance and radicalism. Do you own a Church book? Ever even seen one raw? If not, you really are missing out on a true historical experience. I am very fortunate to have been collecting a LONG time. I have a large stack of them I bought from Chuckles when he first found the collection. As well as many pre-CGC. Mostly PCH and GGA. In raw form they are freaks of nature. Literally bone white pages, on many the inks are so bright and glossy they look wet. And then there is that smell. Experiences that in a slab are missing. You think a book is 9.8 then you hold a Church that is 60-70 years old... I have read all of mine. Some several times. Unless, you are a total clod, live in a barn or are a rube, you can learn to handle high grade books. Mine are double Mylared with full backs for protection. I know several collectors like Mr Bedrock, Adamstrange and several other veteran collectors who own or cracked their peds. Mine will stay that way until I decide to turn my historical treasures into simply monetary commodities. Glad you got it @DocHoppus182A guy like you was exactly who I hoped would get it. I bought a group of slabbed Church books many years ago VERY cheap. So I thought why not price it very fair to someone who just wanted to own a piece of history. Now, it is Bob Colt #2 and only a mere 6.0 not like a coded men in tights or horror book. This one was probably one of the ones stacked in piles directly on the basement floor. Chuckles probably originally sold it for $5-$6. Cracking it is up to you. It is a Fawcett so probably no gloss. Probably no “smell” since it was probably never in the closet. It probably has the whitest pages you will ever see on a comic. I doubt it would be that great a read. But you might get a buzz off Edgar’s dna... And afterwards, you can fall into the fools trap of getting it re-submitted in one of those new “beautiful” grey labels. Probably be pretty cheap. Whatever you decide, enjoy it. Glad it went to a good home!
