Grottu
Could use some advice from wiser minds than my own. I realize opinions are divided generally, but would it make sense to attempt a spine fix in this instance? As you can see, this copy has other challenges beyond just the rolled spine. I’m not experienced enough to know what the relative risks and rewards are when it comes to grading a book that’s had a major spine adjustment. comicdonna
If the spine roll was removed, it would put some defects on the back and make it present better, and possibly give it a higher grade. However, being a single staple book, there is a greater risk of it becoming detached. KCOComics
Grottu
Hadn’t even considered the single staple. Good point. comicdonna
thehumantorch
Spine roll removal would certainly make the book look better. If you do get it pressed send it to an experienced pressor as it could sustain damage if the paper is brittle. Staple detached or spine split could be a problem. KCOComics
@joeypost For a book like this, consult a pro. I have an opinion, but would hate to have my opinion be wrong on this guy. Grottu and comicdonna
aardvark88
Recommend sending your Timely to a comic book conservator like @427Impaler for spine roll fix. Grottu and KCOComics
Popular Post joeypost
Joey knows nothing about fixing spine rolls. Keep in mind this was just the spine roll removal...not the final press and clean. theCapraAegagrus
I would consult a pro, because it would be worth it to me.
Grottu
Thanks for all the feedback. Will seek out someone with expertise. I also learned something new as a result of this, which is the single-staple practice in the 40s due to wartime shortages -- cool tidbit I wasn't aware of! comicdonna
Grottu
Just FYI, decided to reduce the spine roll. Mostly successful and staple still intact (though obviously was seriously stressed to begin with). Getting it ready to send in. comicdonna
