CGC grading compared to PSA

I just saw the grades for some of the cards I sent to CGC, but they haven't been received home yet. All but one of the cards were opened by me in 2002, put in a sleeve, then in a box, and never played. I was expecting a few 10's, but got 9.5's instead. It reminded me that I'd read somewhere that CGC is tougher on trading cards than PSA. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone disagree?

Here are the cards I have coming back to me (with 32 cards still in Sarasota):

9.0  Articuno SkyRidge Holo H3 H32
9.0  Charizard Expedition reverse holo 6 165
9.0  Dark Gengar NeoDestiny First Edition 6 105
9.5  Articuno SkyRidge Holo H3 H32
9.5  Celebi SkyRidge Holo 145 144
9.5  Crobat SkyRidge Holo 147 144
9.5  Forretress SkyRidge Holo H8 H32
9.5  Politoed SkyRidge Holo H23 H32

Hope you got subgrades on those nice cards.....  Not sure if you can get CGC 10's without subgrades.  But also, as far as grading standard between PSA and CGC, in theory your 9.5 are PSA 10's...  Getting a CGC 10 would be like a PSA 10.5, which they don't do.  A CGC 10 is very hard to get.  It's not gem mint, it's prestine mint.

9.5 is exceptionally good. The vast majority of cards even fresh out of the pack will have some small dings. I’d think of it as the other way around, because PSA doesn’t give decimal grades and you’d have probably gotten a 9 instead of a 10 with them. I’ve personally never gotten a holo card graded a 10 from PSA and I’m waiting to hear back from CGC. There’s always something, even factory lines or small scratches.

A BGS or CGC 9.5 should be equal to a PSA 10. PSA cuts half grades off at 8.5 I believe. Both are the "Gem Mint" grades from the companies.

CGC will give a card the following:

4 10 subgrades = Perfect 10

3 10 subgrades, 1 9.5 = Pristine 10

3 10 subgrades, 1 9.0 or below = 9.5 or below

2 10 sub-grades, 2 9.5 or below = 9.5 or below

Perfect 10 is not allowed unless you pay for sub-grades; CGC will not allow it

Pristine and perfect 10 is not generally seen if you submitted at Bulk level

Shucks, if I'd known that, I would have paid for sub-grades. I didn't even know what they were.

YOU DO NOT NEED SUBGRADES TO GET A PRISTINE 10.

There are plenty of examples of CGC pristine 10’s WITHOUT subgrades.

Ok, what about a perfect 10 though?

Yes. You need to get sub grades for a “perfect 10”.   People read this and assume falsely that a 10 is not possible without paying for sub grades. They are just as likely to give a 10 to a bulk submission as they are any other service level. Anything else is simply speculation without any shred of evidence.

I don’t see how this is a big deal. PSA is the largest card grading service and doesn’t even offer sub grades.

If it’s a huge deal to you to have the word “pristine” replaced with the word “perfect”, then pay for sub grades.  If you can live with just the word “pristine”, don’t pay for sub grades.

I did say 'generally' you won't get a 10 in bulk submission.  Not that it doesn't ever happen.

Also, 4 examples is not 'plenty' of 10's, but I did say perfect 10 is impossible without sub-grades, not pristine.

When and if cgc releases the long-pending census, it almost certainly won't list how many, if any, of the 10s were submitted at bulk level, and it will likely also not say how many of the perfect and pristine 10's have subgrades.

But do pay attention to the total population of cards and the minute percentage of 10's, particularly compared to PSAs pop report.

Maybe my eyes deceive me, but I'd question a 10 centering on that, compared to some with 9.5 centering I've seen. Looks heavy on the left border and top.

It probably has to do with the front AND the back, as usually there is more forgiveness for the back centering on a 9.5.

I don't think we'll truly have a sense of how hard it is to get a CGC 10 until we have a population report. I suspect it's going to be dramatic, like proportionally about 1/5th or 1/3rd of PSA's 10 rate or something crazy. 9.5's are underrated and 10s are seriously underrated; you score a 10 and it should be special, especially on a non-Japanese card.

I mainly deal in comics but during the Damndemic sent a bunch of Pokemon cards in. So far, 9.0/9.5 has been the average and there were a handful I "thought" would be a 10....so it's hard to say with any certainty that 10's are possible to any realistic degree IMO. I've only used CGC for cards in 2020 and one small submission (which I don't know what the results are yet) in 2021. Let's keep this thread updated...:)
