Another Ebay Scam Part 2: Multiple Identities!
1 1

22 posts in this topic

In my other thread (Another Ebay Scam) I detailed how a buyer tried to squeeze me to give me him some money back and I canceled his order before it shipped.

Well...The story continues and I think it's worthy of a new thread.

--------

The "next" person I sold it to, received the book, waited 2 days, and then told me how he just saw a small defect on the book that supposedly knocked it out of the 9.6 grade assigned by CGC.  He said he wanted $40.00 back.  The "first" buyer wanted $45.50 back.

Not wanting to go through the hassle of a return and then having it come back with "all new defects" (I've had this happen) I simply gave the "new" buyer his partial refund..

Only after, only after, I did this did I see that buyer 1 and buyer 2 were the exact same person!!

Ebay has quite a flaw in that you can't see the buyer's name until it's shipped.

Uggghhhh!!

I called Ebay and then said they'll look into it.

Good Lord the hoops these scammers will go through!

This happened to you?

Not going to lie, I'd be furious if I were you. But ultimately, it's sadly too late. I don't know about you, but I'd want to know about this person, so I'd definitely add him to the bad ebayer thread. It's not much, but it's about the worst we can do, sadly.

What a jerk!

I don't get it, how could you not recognize the name when you shipped the book? (shrug)

A new thread for it? I would be a bit embarrassed to post this, but to each their own. 2c

I don't understand the story.

You're saying that you were talking to the same account and didn't realize it was the same person?

I don't understand how you were "talking to them" without having a user name or anything.

There are details in the original thread that explain how it all happened.

The thread that ISN'T linked to here?lol

I'm sorry but if this guy wants the support of the community he should actually explain what happened and if half the story is somewhere else he should have linked to it. And if you're seeing me "needing more details" and your response is to try to assign me homework when you already know the answer and could just type it...well that's not how you build a community.

Part of the reason we have so many scammers in collectibles trading is that we've sorta accepted a very short term, twitter style discourse where no one is really allowed to have a complex discussion and no one ever does the work of actually explaining their point.

How can an ebay user be messaging this person without him seeing their user name? That's not how eBay works for me and I've used it for decades. I been on it since MTG Revised, lol. If you get a message, you get a user name. I literally don't understand how its remotely possible to talk to the same account without knowing it. Ebay has tons of problems. Its filled with bots designed to inflate the values of all assets. It's gross. But the problems this post is about just don't exist in my experience.
