Here are my favorite purchases from this year...

While I wish there was no tanning on the spine on this book, I really wanted to lock in a copy before prices got out of control, thinking I can upgrade (or slightly downgrade) later:

Unlike the first two books listed, I cracked this bad boy out after I got it, and was happily surprised that the pages did not look cream to off-white to me...I'll need to check it out again and see if I missed something...

Staple placement is surprisingly one of the defects that doesn't bother me...makes it easier to see if they're rusty or not.

Me too. That's why I bought the DVD.

I have been collecting comics since 1998, and this last year was my best by far.

First up is this copy of Flash Comics #81, which was on Dale Roberts site.I have quite a few Silver Age issues and figured I might as well garner at least one from the Golden Age.

 

Next up is Detective Comics #236, a book I have had on my radar screen for about 5 or 6 years.

 

I also was able to obtain a copy of World of Mystery #1 off Comic Connect.

 

Hard to keep this at just 3 so I will mention just  one more. Luckily not a long search to find this book, and I now have a handful of pretty neat Strange Tales books. Not too mention I had to work a Kirby cover into this list somehow.

I didn’t buy a lot this year nor went crazy on pricey books but was glad to pick these three up!

Hmmmm, tough one. I made quite a few purchases this year and let a couple go including a GSX 1 resto that turned out not restored upon resubmission but I’ll go with these:

gonna cheat a smidge with the 2 Crow issues as they should go hand in hand as acquisitions go

the Fantasy Quarterly was purchased here on the boards in an Elfquest lot. It was something I wanted to add to the pc though not really a priority but when it popped up in the for sale thread at an awesome price I couldn’t pass it up

…and finally, the 100 page spectacular. I’d been looking for a high grade copy for years and that one popped up on eBay at a steal bin price and I had to make it mine, all mine

So tell me more about the unrestored restored gsx1. Was it purple slabbed?

Yes. First slab said it was trimmed on 3 edges. Resub was same grade universal

It was after I’d sold it. The buyer removed it from the slab for a c&p and resubbed. I was happy for him for taking a chance. Win win

My top 3 acquisitions were all TMNT-related this year, though from pretty distinct versions of the fandom.

First is this original piece of licensing art circa the late 80's from Ryan Brown/Steve Lavigne.  This is one of those images that got plastered on absolutely EVERYTHING during the height of Turtlemania and can even be found pretty regularly on shirts produced to this day.  A cool piece of history from the height of Turtlemania.

Next is from the current IDW series.  This is a cover for a French Omnibus of the series done by the most prolific artist on the series, Mateus Santolouco.  The more of his work I see, the more I'm becoming a fan of his version of the TMNT.  He does a great job with the core characters and makes the turtles very expressive.  He also works with very clean lines.  I already have this one framed.

Finally, here's one from the grittier side of the TMNT.  Simon Bisley has a very unique sense of what the Turtles are and I still think he has one of the best/most intense versions of Casey Jones out there.  This commission was something I got as a Kickstarter reward for a sketchbook he did.  The image is very similar to a piece he did in the Bodycount story he did with Kevin Eastman.  I'm very happy to add a good example of Simon Bisley art to my collection.

Those are all nice but Simon Bisley stuff just wows me every time I see it

My 3 favorite purchases this year. 

First (once I bought this one I sent it in for grading. Was pleasantly surprised as it got the Universal Label!  also this one is one of the Printers Proofs..

Next I bought this one from @Azkaban sale from Don's Collection.  Presents better than the grade and shortly after I sent it to Joey for a CPR. (Currently it is still there.. ) 

Last was just an impulse purchase, but it is just unique.  (Wish it was 1 issue sooner) still..
