Post Your Top 3 Personal Comic Book/Original Art Acquisitions of 2021! 10 10

I only bought like 6 collectables this year and I still had a hard time whittling it down to 3...so here's 4 instead.  

Jim Lee OA?  Michael Turner OA?  Two grails with one stone?  Hell yeah.

As a kid, there were some books you only dreamed of owning.  Some dreams do come true.  (Completes the Wolverine trilogy of 180-182 all in CGC 8.5 because I have OCD like that.  )

Riding that wave of emotions after binge watching all of Clone Wars at the beginning of shelter in place, I knew I had to get some OA of my favorite Star Wars character.  Loved Todd Nauck's artistic sensibilities and just knew he was the right guy for the piece.  And of course, had to get the voice of Ahsoka Tano herself, Ashley Eckstein.    (Of course, I just finished Arcane so my 2022 goal is to get a Chrissie Zullo colored sketch of Spider-Gwen and Vi signed by Hailee Steinfeld.  )

Honorable mention because Surfer's my favorite character.  Finally completed the Surfer/Galactus trilogy.

1) Phantom Lady #17 - This is my comic book grail for so many reasons, and it's been getting harder to acquire one. However, this was the perfect way to enjoy it until I can get a complete copy. A gorgeous presentation piece!

 

2) Vampirella: Sad Wings of Destiny original cover art by Joe Jusko - This is THE definitive Joe Jusko Vampirella piece for me! I never dreamed I would ever own the original art, but things all fell into place.

 

 

3) Creepy #12 (Spanish edition) original cover art by Enric Torres - I had other Enric paintings but not a published cover from the Warren era. Super excited about this pick up!

Wow, a PL17 cover! Hard to believe that still exists. Great purchase! In my million years of collecting one of my favorite books ever. Cragrats!

1. Pep 16: nice eye appeal on this midgrade on a still-underrated blood drainage cover. I love early MLJs, but the secret has been out for awhile and I am all but priced out on the copies I would like. Managed to grab this one, though it was costly. Really happy with it. 

2. Strange Mysteries 11 Bethlehem pedigree: if it's getting tougher to find SA Marvels raw in nice shape, it's next to impossible to find high grade pre-code raw. I love this cover. It's bizarre in all the right ways and I love that there was apparently a working telephone buried with this guy. 

3. More Fun 30: great Flessel cover on this one, with an unusual Middle Eastern theme. I love pre-1940 DC's (especially non-superhero), so was thrilled to add another one from 1938. It doesn't happen often. Dr. Occult interior story too!

Honorable Mention: 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth. My interest in cards (my first collecting love) was reignited 3-4 years ago. Been chasing some of the things I saw as a kid, but never thought I would own. 

 

Awsome purchases Andy! I don’t actively collect baseball cards but that Ruth card would be top of my list.

Great to see other things besides comics mentioned. My favorite purchase this year has nothing to do with comics.

Ah, I see @oakman29 is a man of culture. Here is my former Miata, but it definitely was not completely original (Chevy Vortec 4.3 V6 swap).

I like Jae Lee's work too! I liked his Dark Tower covers, and I have a copy of Marvel Comics Presents 85, which was his first published (interior) work at Marvel.

I bought way more books then I planned on this year, but these are my three favorite pickups of the year, by far.  I know some people frown on signatures on key books and think IH181 is way too common, but these have been like the "Holy Trinity" for me personally ever since I started reading comics as a kid in the 90s. Plus, I think the signatures on the AF15 and XMen 1  just make them even more special (if they were pristine higher grade copies I might side with the no signature camp, but for lower grades and books Stan Lee actually wrote/created, I am all for it) .   

I'm fairly certain at some point i'll sell off the rest of my collection, but think I will always have these three books...(Or variants of these three if a higher grade, better presenting copy comes along at a deal that is too good to pass up ;))

Most of my acquisitions this year were in the form of sending my raw childhood purchases for grading. For purposes of this topic not sure they count so won't add any.

Here are my favorite pick-ups thus far in 2021:

Secrets of the Legion: I'm not a collector who seeks out Newsstands in general especially DC! However there a few books for which I did want them. Secrets being both a DC and non-hot book with an overall low census pop as a result took me a long time to find a 9.8 Newsstand.

Mod Squad: My Dad had told me he was a Squad fan back in the day, picked this up in his memory. Great 60's vibe - yeah it's from 1971 but it reprints a 1969 issue and cover.

Honeymooners [Triad]: 1/1 in CGC 9.8. I still have my raw copy I purchased as kid but picked this up as "a bird in the hand..."   I did send in my Lodestone Honeymooners #1 so a nice matching set of 9.8

Honorable mention: Note marks are due to the scan and scanner used they are not present on the case or book. I still have to get this one done using my new scanner.

P.S. I do get more enjoyment from "odd-ball" books than keys or hot book de jour, thus what I posted.

A good college buddy just passed away and had to leave one of these behind. One of the scariest cars I’ve ever driven. I can’t think of many comics I would want more than this. You can’t take it with you...

Okay, as promised...my three best acquisitions this year, out of half a dozen.  But first....

I'm just as interested in all the old, valuable classics as any avid comic collector would be.  My only 'problem' is that I read all the books in my PC, which I've been selling off a bit at a time.  I didn't invest in comics as much as I do now, but it also means I can't afford the grails like AF 15, TEC 27, etc.  I usually find myself gravitating to books I remember owning/reading as a kid in the 70's, which started with Ghost Rider #1 (I don't have it anymore).  I read my comics, I didn't think about future value.

As I alluded to in another post, I like Sig Series stuff too...it's a fairly recent thing.  I'm always on the lookout for unique and/or hard to find signed comics...even obscure.  I'm all about comics that most people wouldn't think twice about, especially if it catches my eye. 

This year, however, I came across some CGC SS slabs that were graded a while ago...meaning the older slabs.  I kinda like those, even though they aren't as beefy.  I won't pay to have a comic signed by someone, I'd rather buy them already slabbed.  I did that 'signature' thing for awhile, but I stopped doing it about three years ago.

So I buy stuff like this: Uncanny X-Men #177 and #301, both signed by John Romita, Jr.  Then there's my gem of the year...Twisted Tales #1, signed by Richard Corben.  All three of these slabs were purchased from these boards, TT #1 being the most recent and the last for the year (I think).

Twisted Tales #1 and #2 were comics that I had as a kid, but I stopped sending comics in to be slabbed so I sold them off.  Then I found this one...I couldn't pass it up.   My apologies, but I tend to ramble when I'm excited about something.  I almost fell out of my office chair when I found Twisted Tales #1, signed by Richard Corben!!!  I went to greater than normal lengths to get my hands on that one.  It would've been sweeter to have my own copy signed by him, but it was a reader copy and not worth the investment to have graded.  Okay, I'm done!!!

1. Vampirella 1 - I had a hard time finding this but finally scored one from a fellow boardie. 

2.  Vault of Horror 35 - One of my favorite covers and another board pick up.

3.  Sanjulian Original Art - A painting from my favorite artist (not sure why he spelled Frankenstein wrong, but hey, we cant have everything).

That's awesome, Galen! I've got a copy that I've been hanging on to for what seems like forever. I've always wanted to get it graded because I believe that it too would fetch a 9.8. Can't even imagine having a Corben signature on it. That would be the shiot.

Nice one!!  My copy didn’t do well after my younger brothers got to it.  At least it survived, just not good enough to grade.  The CGC SS slab is a suitable replacement.

I don't know, now. I'm seeing some spots in the scan that I never noticed before. I'll have to dig it out to see if they're on the book or just from the bag. I've probably got it triple bagged.
