The original artist who painted Baker's inspiration in 1947 to me at least was inspired by Jane Russell's face. That's who I'm seeing at least.

Beautiful books, but I don't see either as a swipe (unless there's a third source of influence); Ditko's came out just a month earlier than Frazetta's.  hm

It's Captain Science 4, unless someone else did it before, but it came out a few years before those two. Here's a 9.4 that just sold last week . I think the other 9.4 belongs to a guy in Texas.

Also kind of reminds me a little of this Veronica from the cover of PEP 70

Here we have the classic cover of Blue Bolt Weird Tales #115 by LBC in Oct 1952

Cover for Blue Bolt Weird Tales of Terror (Star Publications, 1951 series) #115

and here we have the cover of Spook 25 from just 9 months later, also by Cole, where he has used the main cover image of BBWT as a collage of multiple images in the background.

It seems obvious to me ...perhaps just me... that there are a range of categories applicable to similarly themed work.  There certainly are cases of direct swipes, and granted, some are quite poor. Those may be deserving of the lazy/recylcled label. But others ...regardless of why they were chosen... served as inspiration, a springboard into entirely different realizations of the original concept. Also, variations on a theme and homage art fit into different categories if the work was intended to recreate art in another medium such as a commissioned reimagining of a well known cover.

My favorite example of a brilliant swipe that reimagines work in a different medium is the Spider pulp reversal that Alex Schomburg accomplished for Mystic Comics #1.  It's posted earlier in this thread, but the genius of this extends beyond the reversal of The Spider reinterpreted as The Blue Blaze costumed hero.  The real brilliance is something most folks wouldn't notice unless pointed out. Alex not only did a flipped the Spider image, he took one of the more gruesome characters and turned him completely around so he's seen face front on the opposite side; clearly this was based on the same dude seen from the back on the Spider pulp cover!

Here's the one armed hook dude with butchers bib seen from the front (highlighted by focus):

IMO, this isn't laziness, ...it's pure genius.   :whatthe:  ......................... (worship)

Here's another blatant swipe. 8 years apart, different publishers. The art is so similar that one must assume that Alex Blum migrated to the Iger Shop studio and re-created his Bomber cover for Horrific # 2?

If that's not the case, then he was totally ripped off in terms of the artwork.

Great find!  I love it.

Both are cool covers.

Interesting that the swiper artist removed the shirts of the 2 guys fighting.

That's a great observation. Moving the guy with the hook to the right side surely keeps eyes focused on the hero now.

So many comic book covers have the circular design, especially with crowds.

They have elements common for the era but especially with the release dates, there appear to be no swipes. The closest I saw was a large cylinder in the first two covers and Japanese soldiers in the last 3, but not in a way that looks swiped. 40's war covers share a lot of themes but really this thread is about swiping and LAZINESS in the GA, so examples would be limited to essentially cut and paste type works like Horrific 3 off of War Fury 1 or a change of dress, etc., on figures in the same position, like many examples in this thread have shown. At the same time, many people post works from the same artist showcasing their own particular style or covers that share elements that are very common, without evidence of swiping or simple reuse.

Amazing Schomburg covers with varying degrees of busy-ness. A clever trick Alex loved to use repeatedly was having one or more terrified villains running out of the cover toward the reader, daring the reader to either turn away or investigate further. Here's another terrific example of the technique, on this occasion a "den of evil" with ghouls...

I bet this brilliantly creative technique pried a lotta dimes outta kids hands! xD

There's definitely no "Laziness" in ANY of those covers.  There's SO much detail.
