Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made a suitably thunderous start at China’s theatrical box office Friday. The film had earned about $7 million (RMB 50 million) by 3 p.m. local time in Beijing, according to ticketing service Maoyan.

Maoyan currently forecasts the monster movie to earn as much as $105 million in China. That would be a significant step down from the massive $188.7 million that Godzilla vs. Kong earned in the country in 2021, but easily the best performance by a Hollywood film there in months. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is currently the top U.S. title in China of 2024 with a little over $45 million (topping Dune: Part One‘s $39.5 million local total).

The New Empire is benefitting from particularly strong social scores, so far, averaging 9.6 on Alibaba’s Taopiaopiao ticketing platform and 9.4 on Maoyan.

The new film is Warners and Legendary’s fifth installment in the MonsterVerse series, following the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, where fans finally got to see the two apex kaijus fight for supremacy. The New Empire delves deeper into the mysteries of the Hollow Earth and reveals a Titan menace that necessitates an unholy alliance of Godzilla and Kong.

I'm seeing this about noon today. Easter weekend or not.

I don't believe I've ever seen a Godzilla movie in theaters, so I'll go in with fresh eyes.

I'm old enough to remember other movies, just never got around to it 😆

I will see this because it is the only game in town, but I can't say I'm "excited" about it.  I will confess to getting a bit tired of watching giant CGI pixels smashing into each other again and again and again.

I will be pleasantly surprised if there is an actual decent story that goes along with it.

In its preview night, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire brought in $10 Million USD, becoming the biggest opening foray for the MonsterVerse. Recent months have been a golden era for kaiju fans not only thanks to this crossover sequel, but thanks to other projects featuring the king of the monsters. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters became the biggest television series for Apple TV+, and while not confirmed for a season two as of yet, the series did give kaiju fans a much closer look into the MonsterVerse. In the East, Japan released Godzilla Minus One, creating a new take on the lizard king that received an Academy Award for "Best Visual Effects". Much like Monarch, Godzilla Minus One has yet to confirm if a follow-up is on the way.

First I'd seen in theaters, took my dad who is 84 this year and it's first he's been in 10+ years

Screen X for some spice.

Rolls along fine with not too much trouble. Not my lore or something I know too much about, dad neither, but he called it strange and I pointed out some annomolies I noticed after viewing to him chuckling.

He called it strange and I called it bonding, he liked how it was marketed for all over the world in locations, told me to let him know how it does internationally. :)

Took my girlfriend to see it Sunday afternoon in Thailand. She loved it, knows nothing about the characters really.
i thoroughly enjoyed it and know a great deal about the monsters.
Maybe one of the better modern Godzilla movies. The fight scenes were great and filmed in a way I could actually follow them.
