Common ASM 265 Flaw
1 1

I was pulling out some books for display and noticed the following on my ASM 265

Under Spideys foot you can see a dark ring. One might assume it is a stain of some sort but it’s not. It actually matches up perfect with the circular image seen on the inside cover.

I checked eBay and some copies have this, others do not. Just thought I would shed light on a potential printing flaw that seems common and I wasn’t sure anyone had ever mentioned it before

So, how would CGC view that—grade wise. Even a guess would help. Thanks.

Probably keeps from a 9.8. Otherwise if it is just a printing defect that’s common it might have no effect. The book as is VF+ without it so I doubt that mark changes much

I did a quick peruse and found it on three different venues in a few minutes. My take it is a variation of "ink transfer stain" aka "Oil transfer stain" where the oil from the printers ink migrates, usually to the inside front cover. This seems to have gone in reverse from the inside front cover to the outside. Looking at the inside that is a heavy application of solid yellow with what appears to be some cyan, magenta and black in very small amounts. Guesstimate solid (100%) yellow, 30% magenta, 10% cyan and 5% black (its been 40 years since I was in 4-color pre-press so am a bit rusty.)
