According to Mike's grade distribution table, only 92 players completed Round 2 (down from 104 at sign-up and 97 in Round 1).  Here are the key measures of central tendency for this round (Mean = the average grade; Median = the middle grade in a numerically rank-ordered list; Mode = the most common grade):

The Board scored far fewer bulls-eyes in Round 2 (79 total, or 17% of all grades submitted) than in Round 1 (125 total, or 26% of the grades submitted) and/or in all previous contests.  :sick:  Here are a few other notable observations based on the data reported above:

  • Book #6 (Exciting Comics #32):  By far, the easiest book for the Board as a whole with 39% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 84% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was essentially in line with CGC (2.6 vs 2.5).  (worship)  (worship)  (worship)
  • Book #7 (Brave and Bold #28):  The toughest book for the Board as a whole, with only 5% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 46% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was about 1.5 grade increments more critical than CGC (4.3 vs 5.0).  To my old eyes, the various chips, tears, and color-breaks were consistent with those of "the average used comic book from this era" (that is, a 4.0 VG).  Apparently, I'm a hanging judge.  :boo:
  • Book #8 (Captain Marvel #1):  A difficult book for the Board as a whole, with only 12% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 41% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was almost two grade increments more lenient than CGC (8.4 vs 7.5).  I personally was at 6.5.  doh!
  • Book #9 (Lois Lane #113):  Another difficult book for the Board as a whole, with only 14% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 61% within one grade increment of CGC.  48% of the players erred to the low side, and 38% of the players erred to the high side (with one of the widest grade distribution curves we've ever recorded -- 4.0 to 9.4).  :whatthe:  Because the highs almost balanced the lows, the Board as a whole was only about one-half grade increment more critical than CGC (6.3 vs 6.5).  But don't be fooled:  this was definitely not a win for the home team.  (tsk)
  • Book #10 (New Mutants #98):  Another difficult book for the Board as a whole, with only 15% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and only 55% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was about 1.5 grade increments more critical than CGC (8.7 vs 9.2).  As @Point Five noted yesterday, "That's a 9.2 only a mother could love."  (thumbsu

Yep, every word of this. Beyond the chips and tears, a worn-looking book, with the staple areas quite rough. I spent time debating between 4.0 (which is what I thought it was) and 4.5 (which is what I figured CGC thought it was). Bringing it in at 5.0 must have taken some particularly brave and bold graders.
