I don't have much to say about this, but this is a very strange oddity. Someone on the forums a few years back had a couple Canadian price variant Mark Jewelers Daredevil issues, but I've never seen a pence copy before. Thoughts?

OK, I'm mucking about now but here are the 4 versions of Cap #210:

cap210.PNG.47523418c341840dcc893f6620cefa7c.PNG

The distance between the bottom of the top staple and the top of the bottom staple is more or less the same for the two 30c versions, but the pence and 35c junior subsets are, again, different with a noticeably lower placed staple.

I'll leave it alone now until @Beyonder123 returns

While we wait, I gathered six random issues of Cap #171 from eBay - 3 pence, 3 cents. Here's what I found:

Maybe the pence copies had their covers attached using the same machine as the MJI copies, hence the greater possibility of a MJI going into a pence copy in error? Both are a subset of the main event, so that might make sense.

Isn't it. I love anything like this, that touches on how things might have been done back in the day, and where that knowledge might lead us in respect of the order of production where different versions exist in the same run. I'm not an expert on the stapling process, and haven't even seen a video of it in action, but you sort of would think that the placement distance between staples might always be the same for a run of the same issue. These examples show otherwise, which makes you wonder whether some books were stapled on a different machine - one for the main US copies, and perhaps a separate one for the junior subset books within the run - the pence copies, MJIs and 30/35cvs.

I'm hoping @Stronguy will chime in - I recall him speaking knowledgably about the comic collation process :wishluck:

I'll look out for any videos on YouTube - something like this, maybe (see around the 2:20 mark):

All good fun.

Lol there's a good chance I will

If I ever decide to sell I'll message you first 🙂

So Cool! :x

Congrats on the find the main thing! I didn't want to pry, but was the find at a LCS? the pic looks like dividers and what not, but Idk if that was from when you got it home lol

I remember the MJI/Canadian was a used bookstore or the like, still proves oddities can be found anywhere :headbang:

Unicorn alert! Looks legit(I'd send it in to be sure though). The only bad thing about crazy unicorns is the lack of a market for them. Reprints of key issues with gimmicky chrome covers have a market, but these true oddities are sorely unappreciated! You'd have to put it at a premium on eBay and wait for someone who will appreciate the rarity.

I think I should get royalties every time anyone makes reference to the staple thing. :nyah:

Oh, and as I stated wayyyy back when I first mentioned the staple thing, a lot of late 70's books are hard to pin down or rely on based on staple position. Especially 30 and 35 centers.

It's fun mucking about with it though, isn't it ™

I collect MJ inserts whenever I can get them for cheap. I have some really good ones I'll have to post at some point. But as for selling this one, I don't even know what a good starting price would be. 100? 200? It's really one of a kind. Maybe I'd sell it at some point, but for now it's mine. 😁

I don't know if you've looked at my store on the Bay but if you did you'd understand why I would price it at $9999.99

But seriously, you're probably in the right ballpark, but since regular copies go for $5-10 in the same condition, it's gonna take a awhile to sell it. I've had double cover and other extremely rare items take 3+ years to sell in my store. But in the meantime, I can appreciate them as a part of my collection.
