I’m not sure if we are only talking modern comic artists or just non GA comic artists.

I agree, and so I have to put in a plug for someone who I believe is one of the most underrated SA artists, and who I contend must have had a huge influence on probably my favorite comic artist (Neal Adams): Irv Novick. Take a look at Irv's work; it just feels like the groundwork that was laid for artists like Neal - the expressive faces, clean lines, anatomical details that are sometimes exaggerated but still make sense in the context of the piece.  You could even understand if some of his work was mistaken for Neal's - look at the Brave and the Bold 83 or the Batman 214 for example.

The guy was flat-out great:

The two that immediately come to mind are Brian Bolland and Adam Hughes, although both have been so prolific that we kind of take them for granted these days.  Dave Stephens already has a very dedicated following, so he clearly belongs on the list.

My dark horse candidate is Mike Zeck.  He's had some iconic modern covers, but I don't know if people will necessarily go out of their way to seek out a Zeck cover, other than that Captain America annual. (shrug)

On the painted side, there's Alex Ross (obviously), Glen Orbik, Glenn Fabry, and Brian Stelfreeze, who I think is criminally overlooked.  Arthur Suydam had his day in the sun, but he seems to have burned a lot of bridges, so I don't know if he'll ever regain a big following.

Edit: I guess some of these aren't "current" (a couple for obvious reasons :(), but more "Modern Age."

If we’re allowing Zeck, I gotta give a shout out to Vess

I'll vote for Joe Mad. Love his work. Not much of a cover artist though. His interiors are fire, got to give him that.

Is there an Aussie variant of circle chase #1? That is the book that I had signed raw by Mr. Mad. Big fan, almost the first comic I've purchased with my own money, that much I know, and yet, never got around to the whole series. It was fantastic art and story for the time. This was 80's 90's whenever in the barrio, right next to the "Tijuana bibles at the gas station." I was really too young at 8or 9, glad I picked the comic hhahhahahahahahahaahahahhahahahahahahhhahhahahahahahahah @onlyweaknesskryptonite

I don't know actually. There could well be an Aussie newsstand variant of it. Good miniseries at the time though. Wonder how well that one's aged?

Funny how so many of the “current” cover artists we’ve listed have been around for at least 30 years…Hughes, Stevens, Art Adams, Mike Golden ( don’t think anyone mentioned him yet), JSC, Bolland, etc

hm

The fact that it takes the artists time to be found in all the first that apps procreate, and not that many diamonds in the rough. Only big names who appreciate other big names.

Brian Bolland is somehow still underrated. Guy's covers are eye popping. Not only is his work some of the best from the last 40 years, it's some of the best EVER.

Also, it's not just repetitive subjects/layouts/poses, unlike some other artists mentioned in this thread.
