I remember when the cover was listed for sale on eBay back in 2002.  Seemed like a fortune to me at the time.  I don't know if it sold and for how much.  Very cool cover.

Oh, spot on. So many modern covers, while beautiful, are really just static pinups with no background or action. Not my thing.

Jay Anceleto's craftmanship on covers (for me) is pretty impressive, and he's been around for a little while. I'm not sure how far back his current style goes, but it's pretty stunning.

No one has mentioned Alex Ross.  It's mostly been Liefeld.  Oh and Fred Hembeck got a few votes.

But I think the 3 mentioned above will be the 3 pillars.

I don't think he's done enough covers yet to be solidly in the conversation, but when I first saw Puppeteer Lee's work, I just had to pick up everything I could. I was even lucky enough to score a remarqued signature series on the cheap. I think if he did covers in the volume of some of these other artists, he could definitely rise to the top:

100% Turner is on this list, and doesn't get enough credit/is overshadowed by the likes of JSC and AH (both great btw). I personally love his cover on Action 813.
