Yes, it was one of these two, or maybe both concurrently.  Purchased at Joe's Market - an independent grocer - a short walk from the house in which I grew up. They were and are well loved. Still have them both.  I have better copies purchased much later and will encourage my heirs not to sell these.

Edited to add a picture of the entry to Joe's with some of the staff.  That's Joe on the right.  I walked through that door hundreds of times.  In the early 70s they built a Safeway right across the street that eventually killed old Joe's business.

I don't have the first one I owned (mom bought me lots of Richie Rich, etc. when I was a kid).  But.. I have the first one I bought when I started collecting.  Off the spinner rack at the local party store. Which is why it's in such bad shape.

Given to me by my parents when I was 3 years old.

I no longer have it.  Sadly, it was quite some time after this when I first became aware of the existence of Mylar sleeves and acid-free backing boards, and before I developed significant obsessive-compulsive disorder and started treating comics as sacred pamphlets.

It's also possible that the dog destroyed it.  Sorry, can't remember its fate exactly, as I've slept since then.

[I Am The Answer!]

This specific issue holds a very special place in my heart because it's is the very first comic that I can recall buying and, more importantly, keeping.  Back in Jul 1978, I was a young 13 year old and when I saw this on the spinner rack in my local convenience store I had to have it.  Here was this guy with this big hammer taking on an even bigger snake.  What could be cooler than that?  It spent the good part of three or four years in the top drawer of my dresser with all of my magazines before I rediscovered it and it's been full speed ahead with collecting ever since.  Thank you so much Thor.

It was the summer of 1964. I was just learning to read and my Mom thought reading the Sunday funnies was a good way to go.  We were living on an Army base and the family next to us was getting transferred. The mother offered my mom a huge box of comics, almost all coverless.  The only one that had a cover was a Classic Comic Special on Teddy Roosevelt.  As I remember, the box was all war comics, with many of the books torn to pieces so as to make up whole stories.

The first Marvel I remember was Spidey 16. I've always had a soft spot for yellow Daredevil.

The 1st Marvel comic I bought new would be ASM 21. Unfortunately I no longer have the original bought in 65, we had to move in 69 and I had to leave all of my books behind.
