The names are very logical - because they are not describing the size but the speed at which they are played.  '45' and '33' (actually 33 1/3) refer to the RPM (Revolutions per Minute) of the turntable for playing each type of disc.  Typically, LPs ('long-playing' records) are '33' and singles/7" records are '45' (but, just to make it fun - not always).  And let's not even get started on 78s, which are usually an older format than either of these, but the size is in between the other two formats (10", vs. 12" or 7") and they spin faster than either!

Vinyl’s had a comeback in recent years, so there’s likely quite a number of turntable-owning millennials now.
