Hi,

I love this copy of #52 regardless, but am wondering if the staples affect grade (I’ve heard different things).  The book has not been pressed or anything and the staple push definitely seems like a printing thing.

thanks!

Determining the cause of a popped staple is not an easy one, even CGC with all of their experience with this cannot be 100% sure if the issue is production or handling damage, it could also be caused by poor pressing.

Grading the book without the popped staple...

Blunted corners w/color loss, small/color breaking creases at top/bottom right corners, minor dust/sun shadows on rear cover (or just the lighting?).

IMO, the book presents nicely, however, the color breaking corner creases prevent this book from reaching the VF 8.0 range, a Qualified grade would be in the FN/VF 7.0 - VF- 7.5

How much of a hit will the book take with the popped staple(s), depends on the severity, is the cover or centerfold loose, detached at one staple, detached at both staples, the hit could be anywhere from 1-3 points in grade. Worse case scenario, both the cover and centerfold are completely detached, VG+ 4.5 - VG/FN 5.0.

I don't have a ton of experience with this, but it looks like a classic case of "recessed staple" defined in CGC's book. A manufacturing-related issue characterized by staples centered on the spine, but below the bend. According to the same book, recessed staples range from 8.5-9.6. These seem pretty deeps, so start at the lower end. The way a recessed staple goes lower is if there is torn paper caused by the recess, then it can go down to 7.0. I don't see much tearing, but it's hard to see fine details. I'm a little concerned about this discoloration along the inner bottom edge of the front cover. They love to jump on a discoloration issue & ding a book below what you expect. I would say worst case scenario 6.5/7.0. Best case 7.5/8.0. Sometimes these big keys seems like they get the benefit of the doubt, so I would be more optimistic than pessimistic. Still waiting (a long time) for my copy to come home.

I’d give it an 8.0 based on additional pics. Ver nice. Congrats!

The seller originally had it as an 8.0. It sat, I think because of the staples, for a while and I got it for an offer based on valuation as a 6.0.

I think I was able to take that risk because I had previously bought books from this lot and so could interpret the photos differently and knew their books were generally very solid and definitely unpressed/treated (they’d been in a box for 40+ years).

and yes I feel very lucky, thanks!

Beautiful copy. I am relatively new at this, but I'd grade at 7.5-8.0, and be happy with this in my collection and make my kids worry about a misgrading when they have to deal with it when I'm gone. These old books, and especially the key issues are hard to find with such a nice cover.
