Got a solicitation from CL this past week promoting big cash advances in exchange for art which could be placed in this month's auction... perhaps that money would be better spent on professional IT help. The "comics show on a shoestring in a basement" mindset from 40 years ago isn't just limited to Douglas, though -- as every painful visit to the microscopic CAF site on my phone reminds me.

In today's worlds using open-source and patching regular is critical.  I work for a Fortune 20 firm and we patch weekly, sometimes more frequently as need or chatter arises.

In 2023 if operating a true eCommerce site you do not have the budget for IT Security then you do simply not have the budget to stay in business.  Based on CL bragging about the items they have sold it seems to be greed and stinginess is the culprit not lack of budget.  Now they will take a huge reputational hit, that even worse braggarts like Heritage can capitalize on in the court of collector/seller perception. 

Simply no excuse in today's world to get caught with pants down when there is AWS for example to let handle security of the cloud while you handle security in the cloud.... Yeah yeah I did just get my Architect Cert even if my firm doesn't use AWS.

I do feel for the folks at CL but if Josh was not sooooo cheap they would not be in this mess.

P.S. I am a CL link fan as a buyer and have been for 18 years but may need to re-think that stance as their lack of IT security is highly problematic.

Don’t worry. The guy responsible for getting packages shipped is the same one getting the site back up. It will get fixed…eventually.

Still remember a long convo with Doug at the NJ con last year, where I strongly asked for some sort of item tracking so I could follow and bid on more auctions (I"m typically a close of auction bidder). In other words, hey could you make a small change so I can buy more from you. To paraphrase his response: Nope, we aren't adding anything because we like what we are doing and it works.

I walked away thinking, who treats customers like this? Perhaps what is happening to CL now is karma.

boom goes the website. they will fix and it will happen again and then it will fail again. there will be a half hearted apology and a shrug of shoulders.  

i dont know what doug is saying lately, but i used to have conversations about the website years ago, and back then he just would roll his eyes and say i know, but there was no appetite to change and it wasnt his decision. i havent asked about it in years, cause i did once and why would i again.

I get impression it's all Josh's bat and ball. Still Doug being an officer of the corporation may have some liabilities both in criminal and civil arena's - talking in general not just regarding this situation.

Regardless of the exact issue this time it could have very likley been avoided if Josh had not been so cheap with tech budget (geez, Spencer and Doug even admitted they had 90's code on their site), which is the very heart and lifeblood of his business. Josh's miserly stinginess now will be costing him BIG TIME!

I advise all to monitor whatever credit card they have on file with CLink very carefully! Not just for the next week or 2 but for the next 90-120 days!

I just checked that...luckily I have always paid with check, so didn't have but one cc on file that expired like 10 years ago...so whew to that
