Determining FMV for GA comic
0

Depending on how often it shows up for sale, https://comics.gpanalysis.com is probably the best place to start for the cheapest cost in making that determination. Ebay can give you a ballpark, but again - depending on how often your book shows up for sale will affect the accuracy of previous sales. OSPG is not a good resource for GA Books.

Others will know more, but that's a pretty big book.  My Comic Shop calls it "rare" and " First comic book made available for public purchase via newsstand distribution"

You'll want to figure out the approximate grade you believe the book will receive from CGC and estimate the FMV based on that.  Make a good faith effort - if the book comes in above or below your estimate, CGC will adjust what you pay.  Not a lot of sales listed at GPA, but here's what they have.

One edit that I would suggest, based on my understanding:

-if the book comes in at a grade that puts the value above your estimate, CGC may adjust what you pay (but typically won't bother if it's relatively close)

-if the book comes in at a grade that puts the value below your estimate, CGC will not adjust what you pay

Quite a book there. My advice get it graded by CGC asap using one of the two fastest tiers they offer. A book like that will look awesome in a shiny new holder. Hope for the best and offer it here first.

I have a GA book that I want to submit for grading. How do I determine what is the FMV, which determines the cost of submittal? Thanks.

I believe this is a perfect example of "the chicken or the egg paradox" which you seem to find yourself now stuck in:  ???  lol

In other words, in order to get the book graded, you first have to come up with an estimated value, but in order to do that, you have to come up with an estimated grade on your own which makes me wonder why I have to pay them for ME to do THEIR job for them?  :ohnoez:

This is exactly why you need to estimate the value based upon the LOWEST grade possible, and also assume that the book has been restored in coming up with your estimated value.  After all, do they really expect ME to also be a restoration detection expect since I thought that is what I was paying them to do.  (:

  If this is your first submission, I'd use the "I'm new to these parts routine" and ignore current auction hammer prices. hm

Point out that you just looked at an Overstreet Price Guide and it says "...this book's worth this much in this grade" and see if that interpretation of FMV gets any traction. (thumbsu

I agree. What a cool book to be your first sub to CGC. I’d do Express just so you get it back quickly and I hope you’ll post your results here. Would love to see this book!

thanks everyone.  in full disclosure, I have submitted modern books before, but nothing near this value.  I think it's a 2.5-4.0.  I haven't gotten time to sit down while nothing is going on and properly and carefully evaluate it. I do know that the cover is not detached but I haven't counted the pages.  Got it at an estate sale in Vicksburg, MS along with Popular Comics #3.
