PGM Silver Surfer #1

Looking for any thoughts on my Silver Surfer #1.

Items of note:

  • Color breaking crease through bottom portion of front cover
  • Color breaking crease bottom front cover corner
  • Color breaking crease 1" in from bottom left front cover
  • Small cover edge nicks
  • Several spine ticks
  • Small edge tear half way down back cover
  • 2 1/2" of scotch tape applied to bottom left cover corner. Visible on the front and back. Assuming this was placed due to a cover split.

Most of this stuff I can account for, but the tape is really the thing I have the biggest question mark on where that lands the grade. I just have no experience with getting stuff done in that condition.

That's all the major stuff I can think of. Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks all!!

Not sure how much the FC is attached above the obvious split at the base. It looks split further up too, maybe barely attached in places. I think the BC is split & taped. The split(s) here are severe enough that a tape reattachment/presence shouldn't impact the grade any further. 4.0/4.5. I am leaning 4.0 unless the delicacy of the square bound format gets some consideration. The have a square bound with a similar or less severe split at 4.5.

CGC mentions tape on the label anymore

It might show up in the notes, but I don't think they put any defect details on labels unless it's a Qualified or Restored label. Since tape doesn't count as restoration, the label will be blue without saying anything. They just list tape in the list of regular defects in their guidebook

I clean and press my own books... I think a pressed book always looks better -- always.  It might not bump, but if there are two raw copies of the same book with the same grade then you will gravitate towards the pressed book.  I will now take off my Captain Obvious cape...

If you press and clean the book perfectly, there are things that will just not press out, but look better.  The tape (as pointed out) and the spine split it is patching is the issue.  If you did everything else (perfectly) I would not be surprised with a 4.5 grade.  Depends if you are getting the book to preserve it or sell it.  I am not sure what the cost would be to grade if they think it passed the value threshold ($400).

Tough call on grading, but not on cleaning and pressing.  I love this book!
