Recently I've returned to buying raw books, mainly low grade readers, just because I enjoy reading comic books most of all rather than just having them in plastic.

I am still acquiring books in their plastic tombs of course, but occasionally I shall crack out the odd low grader and enjoy the book properly.

I'll share some of the interiors in this thread and make a note here of interesting quirks I may find hidden within the slab...if any.

Hoping to crack the first one sometime over the weekend.

Please share your cracked out books and experiences, if you feel so inclined.

I jailbreak every slabbed book I get, as I too buy them to read.

So this came this morning as previously posted elsewhere, and I gave it it's freedom tonight.

My thoughts on it are this:

If someone had sold it to me as a raw 2.5 I would have thought that was fair enough. It was graded as a 1.8 which I think is a tad harsh.

Secondly the PQ is generous. It's been given a COW PQ but it's clearly a Tanned to OW in hand.

But hey it's only my subjective opinion.

Can't wait to read it.

Plenty of books fit this thread, but this one comes to mind the quickest, bought 12 or so years ago. If memory serves it was cracked out of a purple 1.0 slab (!!); there's trimming and a big coupon missing from a page somewhere. Ironically it's one of the nicest 1940s books I own.

This Blue Ribbon #21 is so fragile that any sane person would have left it in its 1.5 holder, but out it went. The interiors are just too cool.

Finally, any .5 slabbed book missing its centerfold is an automatic crack-out. This is a really nice book other than that flaw.

Looks 1.8 now that it is out of the slab👍

This book was graded a 1.0 by CGC B/C it has a coupon cut out of the BC.  O/W it's easily a VG-F. The deficiency made it most affordable.

One more for the road. Here's a restored book that I cracked out of a CGC 7.5 Slight C-1 holder. It's a really nice higher-grade copy, with a beautiful glossy sheen and freshness that IMO are much better appreciated outside the slab.

Nice! These Fawcett horror books often have surprisingly good interior art.
