I've put in my seven bids early...have six auctions of my own going as well.  My rule of thumb is seeing everything at least at 50% of market halfway through the auction to predict a pretty much market results.

Art, however, can go through the roof in the final 30 seconds; comics are more predictable.  Really hoping I win a couple pieces I'm watching, although I've noticed (anecdotally) in the past that Feb results are usually strong across the board.

My rule of thumb is that a well-watched piece is probably going to double in price from the final pre-auction bid after the live auction starts. That's my target estimate. It's not foolproof, but it generally works.

I throw tracking bids on tons of stuff, but with the things I REALLY want, I tend to go ahead and put my top bid in, as I sometimes forget about the auctions ending and might miss out otherwise. I leave a little wiggle room for an extra hail mary bid at the end, should I remember to log in, but for the stuff I REALLY want, I go ahead and put in what I'm willing to pay. It works out about 50/50.

In the most recent auction, I didn't bid on any art, but I bid on several comics, and made my "real bid" for about four or five books. These are books that in the last couple of months, my "real bid" would have pretty handily won. Instead, my bids were blown past in about 24 hours.

I feel like the Featured auctions bring a lot more eyeballs, and stuff that seems fairly common to me seems to do much better than in the focused auctions. Just my anecdotal observation. I'm a small fish in the pond, I don't have any shot at most of the art sold in the Featured auctions, so I don't even bother bidding for the most part. But on the comic side, it definitely feels like there's a lot more action than in the last couple of auctions.

The $8900 price of the BWS Conan panel page shows that once again, rumors of the demise of BWS Conan pages have been greatly exaggerated.

On the other hand, very weak prices for the two Frazetta Johnny Comet strips, even taking into account that there's no Frazetta Femmes.  I will never understand selling any genre of OA on Comiclink that is way outside the scope of its very superhero-centric customer base.

Seller took a major loss on the BWS Conan piece :gossip:

There were solid/weak mixed results with the items I was tracking. I was the underbidder on the Michael Turner Witchblade piece. It's a beautiful image, but a tad on the smaller size (6" X 8"), which ultimately stopped me from bidding any higher. Congrats to the winner!!! I hope the buyer did their due diligence and realized the art is from 2002, not 1997, as stated in the description.  Either way, it's a lovely piece.

The Witchblade piece had a very strong result. The Michael Turner Tomb Raider / Witchblade cover were sold for a little more the $20k this year. The museum edition cover was only a quarter size and not inked. It was drawn as a commission 20 years ago, that's why it's not inked. Turner started not let ink his covers with Fathom Killian's tide.

Would you rather have a Frazetta Johnny Comet strip? Or a J Scott Campbell cheesecake splash?

The fact that he overpaid for it before doesn't mean that the current price wasn't strong.

I think the resale prices on a lot of Promise books are still very strong (certainly too strong for me to have won any yet).  But the sellers are taking baths for the most part (sometimes massive baths) because they way overpaid on the initial sales.

And yet a half splash with a babe, and Conan and Elric went for $8.9K.

for a series/artist combo that is supposedly significant, the page went cheap to me.

The one thing that almost all of the BWS Conan interior pages that have come to auction on the various auction houses have in common is that they actually don't have great images of Conan, including this page.

Is that a serious question?  In 20 years, no one will remember who Campbell is.

I was only half serious. I just don't see the fascination with Campbell or Turner, as opposed to every other comic artist who draws pretty women.

It's a tricky page to value and I get why it's had such a rollercoaster ride at auction. Conan + Elric (first app storyline), great, but they're bit players on the page. The top splash panel is really most of the ballgame here, and it's a knockout example of Smith just hitting his artistic stride--but that seems like just the place where his market is weak? Collectors seem to want his fully realized pages, which probably fully starts with Conan 24. What would a panel page from Song or Red Nails go for?

Red Nails would go bonkers. I wish I could find a Snow Giants Daughter page, which are out there.

This is totally baffling to me. It looks like a $300 con sketch.

Exactly my thought!

For 22k+taxes you could have multiple A level strippers or porn stars for more than a night.
