Marvel's EPIC Illustrated magazine

24 posts in this topic

Anyone into collecting Epic Illustrated magazine? I recently purchased a nice run (about 2/3 of the run) in VF+ to NM/NM+ condition. I know there are probably warehouse copies of the series, but are any issues tougher than others? Anyone have any favorites? How do you feel it compares with Heavy Metal? Anything to share............ confused-smiley-013.gif

I've had no problems with finding any of the issues.

Now Bizarre Adventures, another Marvel magazine is a little different since the last issue is comic-book sized while the rest are magazine sized.

Epic Illustrated collector here.

I'm down to about 10 of the latter issues left to get.

I originally bought the first 30 issues off of the newstand, but had later sold them all. I've gotten pretty much all of the issues back again in just this past year.

As far as their availability the later issues don't come up on ebay as often...but there's always a #1 up for sale each week.

Many sellers seem to be trying to get a premium for the later issues starting with the Byrne run of the Last Galactus Story. But, if you are patient, you can still find plenty of bargins.

I don't know the numbers, but I'm willing to bet that those latter issues had somewhat of a smaller print run. Overall a great series with lots of talented artists involved. Highly recommended simply for their content..... 893crossfingers-thumb.gif maybe one day they may become more valuable as others stumble onto the mags.

True re last issues.

#16 is easily the best issue in terms of content though smile.gif It's got the best BWS artwork I've ever seen produced in high quality color plates. Just awesome.

I have them all. I purchased them almost exclusively in 25c bins a year or two after they came out. I have kept them because they show cutting edge science fiction/fantasy stories from their times. Still, they are often stupid and almost always pretentious. But I like them. I don't know if they are hard to find now. My assumption is that they have a collectable value of almost nothing.

Sorry to bump up such an old thread but I am a collector of Epic Illustrated as well. I bought issue five off the newsstand as a teenager, which hooked me into Starlin's Metamorphosis Odyssey. Not a week later, I found and bought a copy of Star*Reach #3 at a local Flea Market.

Needless to say, my thoughts of what comics could be changed dramatically that week.

My favorite stories to appear in Epic are:

-The Metamorphosis Odyssey (Starlin)

-Marada The She-Wolf (Claremont and Bolton)

-Abraxas And The Earthman (Veitch)

-Mythology Of An Abandoned City (Muth)

-The Beguiling (Windsor-Smith)

-Llehs (Bolton)

-The Scared And The Profane (Motter and Stacy)

It should be noted that Abraxas And The Earthman is being collected and is in this month's issue of Previews. Also, The Metamorphosis Odyssey is going to be collected by Dynamic Forces, according to Jim Starlin.
