Thanks a million collectron! Haven't seen most of those, and didn't even know there was a DC book called Secret Hearts. So many comics, so little time.

According to GCD, it's a Bob Brown cover with Adler credited as the inker. . .which would explain why it's a washtone. Adler was the resident washtone fiend of DC. . .the man had a vision.

After taking a longer, harder look at ST #97, I have decided that the cityscape on this cover has a partial wash-tone effect..

Speaking of fever, I noticed that Adler truly had a fever pitch culminating in November/December 1959. His washtone/greytone work began in the mid-50s and continued on until October 1959 when a DC fan would have been treated to 2 greytones:

Technically this isn't a washtone, but a number of people have argued with me over it, and it's from Nov. 1959, so what the hey.

And then things peter out a bit in Dec. and you get only the occasional washtone thereafter. It's like the DC editors corned Adler and force fed him his horse-pills. You just can't beat Nov/Dec. 1959.
