Strange Tales Collecting Thread !

I haven't read through this thread in a long time so I hope this hasn't been covered. What I'm about to do will upset most and maybe make a few happy. One of my favorite characters is Captain America, and my favorite issues is ST #114. Now collectors have been dumping on this issue since the beginning. I admit, like most, I've read Avengers #4 many times and never thought about ST #114 until I talked to a dealer friend at a flea market. I admire this man because he's not afraid to put out the truth and has caught much flack over the subject I now present. He told me that Steve Rogers' 1st silver appearance was in ST. Of course, this blew my mind and I wanted to know more.. Yes, the Acrobat is really Cap in most of the book, but on the last page Johnny reads an old Cap comic which shows Steve in all his glory on 3 panels. Yes, it is a "flashback cameo", but it is still Steve. Now, here is the deal. I admit to not researching this part very well, so please correct me if wrong. I know that Kirby drew the first ten Cap issues back in the day and went on to other things. This would make ST #114 the first time that Jack drew Cap since issue 10 or at the very least, the golden age. These two factors in my opinion make this book more historically significant than ever before.Don't get me wrong, Avengers #4 is classic and one of the best stories of Marvel's silver age but I say that ST #114 needs a new day in the sun. I call this picture......

Exhibit A, nuff said.

Myself + esteemed board member turtleboy23/Andrew were bidding on the #73 + 76 + came up short. Those are strong prices, though they were the HGC of each book. The 107 has become white hot +the #108 NEVER shows up in HG so those were to be expected. The #117 went for like half what the last copy on Heritage went for, though that one was :screwy: IMHO. THe #124,132 + 133 DID go for 2X FMV. ST's are blowin' up!! Good if you have them (thumbs u

I bought my 9.4 copy of 132 for $400 about 3 or 4 years ago and thought I had overpaid. Now it has almost tripled. You are right about "Good if you have them." I'm glad I already have almost the whole run.

$400 is ballpark for what I paid for those 3 books in about the same time frame. At the time I thought it was high as well, but today we look like genuises!!

Supply and demand has a lot to do with it.

The ST #108 only has 5 examples at NM- or better. Doug and Tom? have the

best two, and Rich and I have 2/3 at 9.2. The only copy left on the open market

was just sold, and could have gone for a lot more than $1550. Be interesting

to know who got it.

The ST #132 has 1 in 9.6 (Tom?), then Doug/Rich/I/Mike have 4/6 of the 9.4 copies. That leaves two copies, and one of them just sold.

When #133 in 9.4 sells for a fortune you know things are crazy;-)

my latest addition:

Nice copy!! I always love the split covers on ST, TOS + TTA. You always felt like so much was going on in each book. Back then they could tell a complete, satisfying story in 8 pages. Today? Fegedaboudit!!
