Am I missing something here or is this an absolute no-brainer! Im glad you asked. Yes you are. The distance in popularity between Superman and Captain America is the same distance there is between Captain America and Golden Lad. Thats why a lowly 7.5 Superman #1 is still more valuable than a 9.6 Cap 1.This Superman 1 actually is the highest cgc graded copy unless you want to count the tampered with 8.0 . superman # 1.There is to large a disparity in popularity for there to be anything else. Best copy vs (at best) 3rd best copy (if you consider the MH copy that had its restoration removed really a blue lable 8.0... I do)... BUT - - - Cap aint Superman! and Superman is "very scarce" in unrestored HG compared to other GA keys.. So put me down for the Superman, ratty and all in its lousy 7.5 slab. action1kid Posted November 10, 2007 Share Posted November 10, 2007 If we were to average out the grades of the 22000 Mile High books and average out the grades of the hundred plus or so Allentown books, it would not surprise me to see the Allentowns come out with an Overall higher average grade. Superman 1 is a darn nice book (although I would put it more at the 7.0 range) but that Captain America 1 is just plan incredible and it is one of my favorite golden age covers. Do you know if there is a NM copy of Superman #1 out there? as Yoda says, and we in comics must always remember, when it comes to HG GA keys, "there is another!" Theres a certain root canal specialist who has upgraded beyond the highest existing graded copies available over the years. Whether his Superman 1 is actually a 9.4 is uncertain, but the 7.5 was apparently not strong enought to knock the existing copy out of its place in the vault and went up for sale instead. Even more importantly, it was the first comic that was entirely devoted to a comic book character as opposed to a comic strip character. Prior to Superman 1, only characters with proven mass appeal like Tracy, Popeye and Little Orphan Annie had been given their own books and the material in them was strip reprints. The success of Superman 1 proved that a character whose origin was in orginal comic book material rather the newpaper strips could not only carry his own title, but sell out and require two extra printings. It was a turning point after which original comic books began to take off and the strip reprint books, which had previously dominated the market, began to decline. The success of Superman 1, no doubt contributed to Martin Goodman's confidence in giving his new character Captain America his own title right from the get-go without trying him out in an anthology title first. Does CGC ever note the printing on their label? I don't believe they do, though that may have changed. They should really do this for GA books where it is possible to distinguish bewtween printings. Out of This World #1 is another book that they don't distinguish between printings. I don't understand why they don't do this for GA books - they do list the printing number for books from other periods like Zap Comix and TMNT.
