There is no best guitarist, silly. Page could never play Malmsteen, Boyd couldn't play like Neal Schon to save her life. And Hendrix, well, he didn't play. The guitar was just another limb for the guy... insane.gif

If i had to pick top five, though.....in no order

Eric Clapton

Randy Rhoads

Neal Schon

Jimmy Page

Yngwie Malmsteen

Roy.

Who's the greatest guitarist of all time????

My answer: Hendrix (of course! headbang.gif)

Django Reinhardt.

If you can only pick one.

WOW ! very good pick, most people have never even heard of Django, great player, and I believe with only two fingers on his fret hand.

it really just depends on what style you like,.. I think Hendrix gets way too much credit, maybe due to the whole 60's mystic and the misguided belief that music was much better then. for that era, I'd take Clapton over Hendrix.

for me though, It's Edward Van Halen, say what you will about his strange projects (porno film soundtrack), and his inability to get along well with others (Sammy, Dave, etc.), he is the most influential player ever, he created a whole new style of playing, which is very fun and exciting. I mean the man was building his own guitars and tweaking his own amps at the age of 18.

And most professional rock guitar players, Zakk Wylde, George Lynch (Dokken), Reb Beach, Dimebag Darrell,.. agree that Edward is/was the best.

I also like Yngwie, but he can sound tedious after awhile.

just one man's opinion. confused-smiley-013.gif

He had 3 good fingers. He was in a fire when younger and his ring and pinky were left unusable.

Djnago fans might want to check out Woody Allen's "Sweet and Lowdown," with Sean Penn as a jazz guitarist second only to his contemporary Django. Its very funny and dark, and one one Allen's best.

The question itself is wayyyy too broad! Greatest rock guitarist? Jazz? Blues? Bluegrass? Greatest technician? Most influential? Most revolutionary?

Anyway, I'll stick with what I know--old-school Rock-and-Roll!!--and go with Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix. Chuck pioneered the vocabulary of rock guitar, which Hendrix then expanded and revolutionized. There's not a single person making a living as a rock guitarist today that doesn't owe something (everything?) to both of them.

Not that anyone cares, but here are my personal faves: Keef!, Pete Townshend, Angus Young, Johnny Ramone, James Williamson, Sonic Smith & Wayne Kramer, Paul Kossoff, Mick Ronson, Steve Hunter & Wagner, the Nuge, Leslie West, Nicke Andersson, Rontrose Heathman, Blind Marky Felchtone...and a cast of thousands, all of whom play A LOT better than I do!
