On line is is OK I guess but there is still nothing like turning pages, the feel of the paper, the way the ink absorbs into the paper and of course, the smell of a vintage comic...

...you're preaching to the choir, Brother Bob :cloud9: .....I've gotten pretty good at freeing books from slabs.... GOD BLESS...

I obviously have very few slabs. The cheap, weird, beaters I collect these days aren't worth slabbing anyway...

Took me over two decades to complete this run as I'm no Gator!

Star%20Comics%20Run_zpswpkwdtfb.jpg

Congratulations!!! What a great accomplishment. :applause:

Thanks! :acclaim:

I just need a few issues to finish off the other 3 titles I've been focused on: :pullhair:

Funny Pages - I just need a #40

Funny Picture Stories - need a #4, V2 #1, and a Comic Pages #24

Star Ranger - I need a V2 #11 and I'd like an upgrade on my Cowboy Comics #13

Then it's on to Amazing Man and Amazing Mystery Funnies, etc. :sumo:

Years ago I had tried unsuccessfully to track down a copy of this one. Not for the Terry story, but for the S&K Boy Explorers story: "The Isle Where Women Rule!" :D

Found this copy for less than $100 and scooped it up.

p><p> Marty, I know you share my liking for S&K

I'm not sure where I read it...... maybe in Simon's Autobiography "The Comic Book Makers"..... but I believe it was attributed to poor (...if any) product display..... by that time the market was glutted and there just wasn't room on the rack for everything published..... I'd also heard that as an incentive, some publishers allowed the distributors to keep the returns for free in exchange for guaranteed shelf presence.... GOD BLESS...

Poor sales may well have been the problem, at least in the sense that strong sales would presumably have preserved the series. But they axed Boy Explorers after only a single issue and Stuntman after only two. Makes me think that maybe there was a change in editorial direction or friction between S&K and Harvey management, or something else beyond weak sales.

If memory serves, I was the second person to make significant purchases of Aurora comics from Dennis.

Here's a good one:

A couple not so good ones:

Seems the OO fancied himself an artist and would "improve" the image. :frustrated:

Seems the OO was happy wth the artist on this one. So happy in fact that he traced the girl. :pullhair:

At the time I made these purchases, neither Denis nor I had any idea that the books would be part of a named pedigree.

Dennis was a huge L.B. Cole fan and kept all the L.B. Cole Auroras for himself. When he moved out of Denver, I bought his L.B. Cole collection. :whee: I'll post a few when I get a chance.

Those Boy Explorers on the splash page --- no doubt the original Yancy Street Gang!

I've been reading Terry and the Pirates Vol. 1 that Bill Blackbeard put together. A lot of fun!
