And kids shouldn't be exposed to porn, or what could even wildly considered porn? makepoint.gif

you mean kids shouldn't be exposed to sex.

what about adam hughes covers?

power girl?

red monica?

anime/manga?

are not female porn stars among the few that could possibly live up to the impossible anatomical standards set by superheroines?

it is not unusual to have porn stars at conventions. It is the "norm" from what I see.

That's the problem.

I would think that if parents don't want their kids to get involved they would just avoid that booth...

So easy to say when you are not a parent.

Daddy, why can't we go over there?

Daddy, what does that lady do?

Daddy, why is that lady naked in those pictures?

Why shouldn't a con be a family friendly venue? And why should parents have to be put in the position to explain sex to preschool kids because of something going on at a comic show?

...foster new collectors with a love of comics that sounds pretty straight forward to me and should not have to be defended.

but i am attempting to defend the comics medium (underground comix) in all its forms

and you are defending a personal nostagia that YOU have for comics (and some share)

Also dressing in skimpy clothing and taking a watermelon up the *spoon* for a few bucks should be pretty self explanatory as to the diffrences between a con girl and porn star and why people find it offensive.

true. there are differences (the main one being the presumption of sex)...

it's the similarities (e.g. fandom, dress, etc) that are more intriguing to me.

i don't understand Z... parents are faced with these realities everyday.

why should comics be any different?

just because TV began as family-friendly, it doesn't follow that it is today. what do you tell your child when they ask you about Paris Hilton? Britney Spears? Saw III?

i do understand that what is at the heart of this thread...

*a certain personal nostalgia for comics which is presumed universal;

*notion that comics are for kids or at the very least must be kid-friendly;

*sex is different/dirtier than war, torture, horror, bondage.

the unspoken bias...that the sex that is already pervasive, yet latent in comics and comics fandom IS OK... until it becomes overt (assuming you define AH cvrs as latent).

Maybe "discretion" would be better.

Of course kid's will encounter this at a younger age than parent's care to believe (or remember 27_laughing.gif ) Personally, I don't see the reason to have porn stars at a "comic" show. If the owner of said convention thinks it's necessary for business, which I still doubt, place the area in an "adults only" section. It works for video stores. Same goes for explicit underground comics. The comics I'm fine with as it's tied into the show. What I would expect is discretion from parent and booth owner. Little Bobby, age 10, doesn't need to peruse something explicit just yet.

I'm still waiting to hear whether inviting a porn star to a comic show has a direct impact on ticket sales to the show. I think there is already a "built-in" audience for the show and only a "big" name guest, like Patrick Stewart or Stan Lee, can reasonably influence ticket sales. Maybe I'm wrong?

What has a porn star have to do with counter culture icons like Crumb? Crumb belongs in a museum and has had an impact on the society he lived in. Nothing a porn star has ever done belongs anywhere other then a man's hiding spot in the back of the closet

Hell yeah! I loved when comics were marketed to children and not adults.

To be honest with you, I think the reaction you are seeing is mainly from older(old school if you will) comic books fans with families that are becoming ashamed as to where the hobby they love is heading.

Comics have always had an element of the risqué, be it the thrill of action heros to a "peek a boo" GA cover latent with sexual undertones. That was why as kids, and adults we like them.

But to see the lowest common denominator representing or rather "present" at locations of what we hold dear makes many of us throw up in our mouth a little. That is what this is about(to me anyways) Sex sells because it takes less effort then actually thinking of something worthwhile that people will remember after the initial thrill wears off.

So the challenge is not to figure out which side is right or wrong, but rather trying to think big picture regarding what is best for the hobby in the long run.

Or maybe it is just me.

My answer.. Have a Hooter booth and let the Hooter Girls pass out free comics to those who want that sort of thing and keep a comic con about COMiCS , yes even the magna, soft porn, big booby girls with gun comics. Those things are about the IDEA of sex. NOT the actual representation of the act itself.

If this offends the demographic that wants to see this stuff at conventions, too bad. What you like offends me too.. so we are even.

Time for a short break...

A friend of mine was driving through Hollywood one afternoon with his 9 year old son in the front seat. His son looked up at one of the many billboards which line the city's skyline. This particular billboard had the image of Angelyne, who is a very endowed woman, who is rather infamous here in Los Angeles. After viewing the billboard, my friend's son asked who she was. My friend explained that she was a wannabe actress who was trying to become discovered. The son thought for a moment and then exclaimed, "She has big boobies, I want to touch them." My friend, without missing a beat, responded dryly, "Yeah son, me too." Nothing was said after that about it.

Stallone did a porn movie... Does that mean he shouldn't show up at a comic convention for Judge Dredd?

(Okay, that was a bad example. I still thought the set designs for Judge Dredd were pretty cool though.) insane.gif

Numerous stars have done Playboy as well (Pamela Anderson.. Barbwire.. Stripperella. Where do you draw the line?)

Porn and Crumb...

Robert Crumb wrote/drew porn comics (Snatch, J*z)! I dare not even post the cover for Snatch #2. In fact, he faced obscenity charges in the 70s for a story in ZAP COMIX #4 titled "Joe Blow"... a sardonic take on the 50s nuclear family that was all about incest. Yikes!

6er,

It's not the medium I am criticizing. Go back to page 1 of this now soon to

be dead thread. The arguement is whether porn stars should be celeb guests

at a family oriented comic book convention. Should there be an R rating

on the show where no one under 17 is admitted ? Do dvd seller's that

sell adult only dvd titles "just so you can get an autograph on the real thing "

take preceidence at a COMIC book convention ?? no ..

And if Mike and Brian put a big blue curtain around said celebs, and

don't allow anyone under 17 around, under or behind said curtain, suddenly

ever prepubescent young man will develop an itch that HAS to be satisified.

I know I had a few of those itches in my youth, and still do, honest, really.

As for the costumes of some attendees at conventions now days...

well, I have seen a few too many Wonder Women, that shouldn't have,

seen a few too many Ticks, that should have de-tickified some packages,

Storm Troopers, that needed to spend time on the treadmill, and

lots and lots of Pricess Leahs that should discover the joys of modesty.

I'm an adult, I have indeed pretty much seen it all, but let's give the next

generation of little kids the opportunity to learn about sex from mom and

dad, not from some comic book convention skank.
