that's where people draw large images of "He" "She" and "His" and "Hers", right?

I have no moral objection to a porn star being at a comic show as long as graphic photos of her are kept in an area away from children.

Overall, I think it's a bloody shame that some con promoters feel the need to attract porn star guests in order to get more people through the door. I remember when comic shows were about comics.

I attended a show in White Plains New York several years ago that had an incredible guest list of such folks as Barry Smith, Murphy Anderson, Chuck Cuidera, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, and many, many others. The show was also filled with books that I just sat there and drooled over. High end silver age and stuff that i can't even remember anymore.

The promoter took a bath and never did that show again. frown.gif

Maybe he would have done better if he had porn starts in attendance. yeahok.gif

Its still the same, only difference now is fans drool over porn stars poke2.gif

Are there really people that go to giant nerd parties and pay a fee to walk in the door just to see porn stars? I think if I wanted to see porn stars I'd go to......like.......maybe.......a porn convention?

I wouldn't go to a porn convention to look at comics.......

The worst case I've seen of this was (sorry, Mike and Brian) at a National or Big Apple show 2 or 3 years ago, where one of the porn bimbos was in front of her table approaching attendees as they walked by.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I doubt she was naked, so how was this such a problem? It's the stacks of pornographic pictures out on display that I have a problem with, mainly because I feel bad for any parents there with their kids, not that I have a problem with porn in general. So what's the problem with a pretty lady in skimpy clothing? How is that any different than what we see on TV all the time (have you ever watched Telemundo?!??!) or what you see at the beach? Sure, if she's there waving a 2 foot long around I guess that's different and I guess it depends on how skimpily she's dressed.

Pretty skimpily dressed, fairly aggressive in stopping people, and the requisite nude photos right at the edge of the table with stars barely covering up anything that would make it classify as nudity. You would pretty much have to stop walking to make your way around her and, of course, regardless of age, you would notice the photos as you stop.

And they say Canadian's are conservative insane.gif

For the record, olm6er is not a shill. I've known Justin for quite some time, he is a friend, a fellow UG comic collector, and is as deserving as mod status on the CPG UG forums as he is over at STL when it comes to his knowledge of UG comix

Do porn stars have a place in a comic con? I'm not sure. There should be some comic angle, and it shouldn't be purely for the purpose of getting a few comic geeks gawking.

I guess the main question is should adults have any interest in comics? If the answer is yes, then consider the following.

Comics were founded on this hard-to-believe notion of entertainment.

It just so happened that the idea of "super-beings" stuck with readers better than animals did.

To polish the appeal aspects of the super-hero, a dash of reconizable beauty ideals were thrown into the mix.

For example, the pro bodybuilding circuit had a major influence on reinforcing the ideal of strength, power, and sex-appeal for readership. How else were a bunch of adults going to believe there was anything super or fantastic about the characters?

Look at the super-heroes of the 60's and compare them with the super-heroes of the modern day. Then compare the pro bodybuilders of the 60's with todays, and you will notice that Thor in pre-100 issues of JIM looks a lot smaller in size than the modern day Thor. Anatomically speaking, you could stuff two of Thor's legs into the bicep of todays version of Thor.

Look carefully at the way certain heroines objectify women and reinforce the notions of the beauty ideals. Nothing sags. Its all tight, and all the features that the superficial male appreciates are all explicitly displayed, and the poses themselves are about as suggestive and provocative as the women on the covers of any soft porn mag.

Super-heroines have also gone through a transformation since the days Sue Richards wore a Fan-4-suit. Today, the Lara Croft look would make Sue appear like she came from a monastery, and yet, even Crofts ultra-sexy outfit has become tired and tame in comparison it to the more modern suggestive and provocative "power-girl" look.

Why would the comic industry find it necessary to place scantly clad super-heroines on covers, and place them in provocative and suggestive poses?

Because maybe - just maybe, comics aren't for kids after all.

I find it far more offensive when young children are sitting in front of the tube, playing a video game, and seeing a female character that is barely wearing any clothes strutting their CG butt and chest in front of their faces.

More offensive is having to distract them from looking away from an episode of Fear Factor or some other program that is playing the sex card to improve its ratings.

The access issue a program or video game that can be turned on once a day, or once a week is far more troubling to me than needing to use some parental discretion/guidance on a convention floor once or twice a year.

To the point that comics that contain sexually explicit content make up a small part of the comic scene - look carefully at the comic stands the next time you walk into your LCS, and you'll notice that sex, the objectification of women and the ideals of beauty are reinforced on nearly ever single cover or story of super-hero themed comic books.

And finally, if your still against the idea of having sex linked with comics, and seeing porn stars at comic cons, then stop going, and stop buying comics. Otherwise, the industry is left with no choice but to follow the money-making trend that sex sells.

Sorry but the fact that comic heroes and heroines are drawn in a sexy way or with attractive features doesn't make them comparable to porn or even overtly explicit. Even in disney movies, female characters are drawn with ridiculously tiny waists and model-features... does that mean porn stars should be signing autographs at disneyland? The ideals of beauty are what they are, most people (male or female) would prefer to read a story with an attractive hero than an unattractive one, thats just how it is. confused-smiley-013.gif

Porn and comics are not the same thing. For most of us comics are to be enjoyed for their artistic quality not for some kind of lame sexual gratification.

I don't see what porn stars have to do with comics or comic conventions. Porn stars belong in porn conventions... BUT, if we MUST have them, at least keep them and their "material" away from kids attending comic cons.

If people had been bringing their children to the shows and spending money in the first place,Mike and company wouldn't have needed to bring in outside artists to pump up attendence.

It was the decline of the monthly shows that forced promoters into seeking new markets, not the other way around.

Over the last several years,I can count the number of kids under 12 I've seen at shows with one hand.

I'm not going to argue over who's seen how many kids at a con at any given time. I personally saw quite a few people with young children and young teens at the wondercon. confused-smiley-013.gif

Look, all I'm saying is that the few children that do attend deserve to be protected from stuff that isn't appropriate for them. Is it so unreasonable to ask that porn stars and sellers with adult material be confined to a specific area which requires over 18 ID to enter? Is that really such an outrageous request? confused-smiley-013.gif

No, it isn't. Perfectly reasonable.

Well, to that I might ask what superpower does this "porn" start have? The "HTK" power (Hob the knob). "Most" of today's female superheroes couldn't even walk upright the way they are drawn. But maybe deep down the artists are hinting that these superheroes also have this power being the only way they could walk is on there knees.
