And kids shouldn't be exposed to porn, or what could even wildly considered porn? makepoint.gif

you mean kids shouldn't be exposed to sex.

what about adam hughes covers?

So pretty girls = porn now?

Are you equating Adam Hughes with a pornographer? Seriously?

That analogy is so thin I can read my copy of SOTI thru it.

Porn stars w/ comic books (Asia is NOT on this list BTW):

(Source: Carnal Comix, does not include possible other appearances in EROS/Fantagraphics)

Those are Porn Stars with PORN comic books.

Graphic reinactments of Porn Stars scenes put into pencil and ink is a paper version of a porn flick.

I would support anyone who wanted to attend a comic show who did a comic that was not simply a different medium for the same hard core sex acts.

Or maybe put them in a room at the con behind a beaded doorway like the adult section at the local video store. 27_laughing.gif

You want to buy porn that shows a one-legged nun *spoon* a goat?

Given that it's hard not to come across porn on the net, I'd imagine such a site already exists. smirk.gif

I agree with the Donut though. Well said

I don't think your JC! Not by a long shot.

I've known Justin for a while and can confirm (as will anyone who frequents CPG’s UG boards) that he's not JC. Just to add my two pennith to the debate; even though I have friends that work in the adult entertainment industry, I share the view that comic book conventions are probably not the most appropriate forum for the promoting of porn stars. On the flip side, I take Justins view that these shows are almost certainly better off for the inclusion of counterculture material.

Well, since he's a legit person, great. Good to have some differing opinion.

To compare people not being comfortable having pornstars at a place where some bring their children and a government funded program of censorship based on questionable research is a bit much don't you think?

893scratchchin-thumb.gif censorship is censorship.

anyways, its been real.

i understand why Asia might offend Zipper or yourself...

i urge you to vote with your dollar.

but this antiquated notion that sex and comics don't mix is absurd.

it just doesn't hold water.

Newbie opinion: I'd say it would be okay as long as Robert Crumb draws Asia Carrera in an Underground porn comic book. thumbsup2.gif

segregation of it is a different issue and not one i am personally for.... because segregation contributes to what has kept underground comix (yes, sometimes pornographic) out of Overstreet and has swept the importance/influence of underground comix (sometimes pornographic) to the wayside. the back room. but segregation IS different than outright censorship... still (for me) it implies discrimination.

Is 7-11 discriminating against Playboy & Penthouse by keeping them behind the counter so kids don't have access to them? Are theatre owners discriminating against R or X-rated films by not selling a ticket to the 10-year-old that walks up to the box office unaccompanied by a parent?

Censorship is when the government restricts access to ideas, books, photos, etc... . Decisions to limit what appears at a comic convention are market driven choices. There's probably a hundred brands of soap that never appeared on the grocery store shelves. Were they censored? No. The manufacturer decided, whatever the details of their corporate criteria, that these items wouldn't sell.

Whether they're market driven choices or not, they still have to abide by the law. Is it legal for a vendor to display pornographic images in an area accessible by children?

The very sad part is that Comic Conventions apparently cannot support themselves without the inclusion of Porn Queens or weapons vendors.

Frankly, the weapons vendors are what I consider porn.

Go to a gun show if you like that stuff...but keep them out of comicons...including San Diego.

Re: UG's..I remember going into head shops in the late 60s and picking up the latest issues..still have them ...somehow, back then, I didn't consider them "porn"..but just another In Your Face to The Man.

I think things need to be masked like they are at newstands --- you can show a lot, but not everything.

Are we all going to different conventions? The conventions I set up at (and visit) usually SPECIFICALLY have a NON-NUDITY clause in their contracts. So overt pornography is usually masked or restricted. This even applies to paintings or to art.

you mean kids shouldn't be exposed to sex.

what about adam hughes covers?

power girl?

red monica?

anime/manga?

are not female porn stars among the few that could possibly live up to the impossible anatomical standards set by superheroines?

Oh no you didn't girlfriend! 893naughty-thumb.gif

You'd better not be comparing Adam's beautiful work to common pornography, thats insulting to him and to his fans.

Drawing beautiful, sexy women doesn't equal porn. Michaelangelo's nudes were not porn. There's is a very clear difference between tasteful nudity and blatant pornography. sumo.gif

Either way, books/art with sexual content or nudity are not appropriate for children. End of story. There is no reason to have this stuff pushed on kids at cons. What difference does it make to you if its put in a separate section? Those who want porn can still get it, and parents can take their kids around without being afraid their kid's will get an eyeful of some porn star's goods. sumo.gif

i'm going to assume that big apple doesn't or didn't have such clauses because i saw some graphic stuff there when i accidentially wandered into a porn corridor. by showing "a lot" i mean stars placed on the "illegal" areas, but with 99% of the skin showing. not that all newstands even do that.

Yep, most cons do have clauses like this. And, to varying degrees, my experience is that these guests and vendors often (not always, but often) do everything they can to barely or technically comply to the letter of the clauses (often putting parents and kids in the same situation) or outright flaunt the clause and wait to see if anyone will put their foot down. What does it matter if a stack of photos has strategic areas barely blocked out, if the same photo and others similar to it are stacked in piles front and center of a table with kids passing within a foot or two, right in their line of vision. Remember, these people are at shows to make money, too, and they often will do what they can to attract customers. The worst case I've seen of this was (sorry, Mike and Brian) at a National or Big Apple show 2 or 3 years ago, where one of the porn bimbos was in front of her table approaching attendees as they walked by. My friend, who was there with his two young sons said something along the lines of "How do I explain that?" and quickly steered them away from her. AND every other dealer in the area. Must have been real good for business.
