selegue
... Nice cover!!!! I thought it was from Daredevil or Silver Streak, looks like the Claw to me from the original pic you posted!!!! lou_fine
Winning these contests are often about timing, in the sense of being on the thread when the question is being asked, instead of showing up days later. I'll be posting another Quiz at 7PM (EST) if anyone wants to check back to see if they recognize the image. BZ; Thanks for the advance warning! (thumbs u Didn't seem to help though as I just got back home from a long and late dinner. Took me all of two seconds again as I used to have the Allentown copy of this book. Maybe I just have to spend more time on the boards here as I'll never win one of these contests at the rate I am going.

Timing is everything! Thanks for doing the quizzes, BZ. They are awfully fun (and frustrating if you know the image but can't remember why!) BangZoom
Thanks for doing the quizzes, BZ. Thanks. I enjoy doing them and almost always seem to notice something that I'd overlooked previously. In this case, it was Joe Simon's signature which apparently the CGC grader (and OPG) have also missed. Note: The label cites Lou Fine as the cover artist.
BangZoom
Incidentally, that's a GORGEOUS copy MrB. Yours, I assume? Formerly owned by lou_fine?
BangZoom
I just noticed that CGC listed the publication date as May, 1939. It's actually May, 1940.
Doctor Svord
I enjoyed the hardboiled pulp prose. It reads like one of the scripts to the old time radio show, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Incidentally, for those with an interest, over 12,000 OTR broadcasts are available for free at: OTR.Network Library Thanks for the link BZ! (thumbs u I'm not much of OTR buff myself, but have read a good Chandler novel or two. Love Film Noir. "Out of the Past", "Double Indemnity", "Pick-up on South Street" (Richard Widmark, what an under rated actor.) Thanks again
BangZoom
Love Film Noir. "Out of the Past", "Double Indemnity", "Pick-up on South Street" I do too. I also collect movie posters and have a 1-sheet of "Out of the Past" hanging on my office wall and a 1-sheet to "Double Indemnity" out in the hallway. MrBedrock
Incidentally, that's a GORGEOUS copy MrB. Yours, I assume (formerly owned by lou_fine)? Thanks, BZ. Yes it is the copy Lou owned. The cover artist attribute is obviously wrong...but I never realized the publication date was wrong, even though it now seems so obvious. I think it probably should be reholdered and corrected. What do think about doing the quizzes weekly at a set time? Maybe start a seperate thread. If you would like help with scans, images etc., let me know, though I love playing and would hate to be disqualified because of prior participation. Either way please continue them! Theagenes
What a great book! It's easy to see how the mistake was made - Simon is clearly mimicking Fine's style here. Jeff
The Black Hand ®
Here's a few more Wonderworlds, just for the fun of it. Those Wonderworld comics have some of the greatest cover images. I was at a family gathering and I was showing people those covers and no one cared! Am I alone here with those kind of non-reactions? I mean, I can appreciate what other people collect. Art, guns, coins, toys, etc. but I cannot understand the lack of appreciation by non collectors for some of those truly great cover images. All I ever get are value questions.Drives me mad. BangZoom
I'll be posting a new Pop Quiz at 9PM (EST). Tonight's offering is seasonal in nature and I think it'll be rather easy for this crowd of collectors to recognize.
