The Death and Return of Superman Multiple Printing Saga

My journey into this wonderful hobby began in early 1994, when I found The Death of Superman graphic novel at Kroger, I was 11 years old then. The graphic novel collected the seven issue storyline "Doomsday!", the comic book colors inside hooked me. I had heard of this “event” but I was so late to the party that it was over. The Death and Return of Superman story arc was a trilogy of storylines; "Doomsday!", "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen!", all ancient history by '94. After I got The Death of Superman graphic novel I searched out issues for  "Funeral for a Friend" and "Reign of the Superman!," not an easy task for a kid with no job (or allowance 'cause I never did chores), who's only transportation were his parents or the school bus. I was able to catch up thanks to few Toys-R-Us trips, where late comers like myself were able to pick up various two packs and packaged sets of comics, with a lot of Superman books. I found most of the issues I needed for "Funeral for a Friend" this way. As I got more into collecting I decided I wanted to have the individual "Doomsday!" issues, even thou I had them nicely collected in TPB form, after another Toy R Us trip, I got all those issues from a box set.

As I started accumulating price guides, poly bags and backing boards a monster began to gestate, who became concerned about condition and value. I then discovered there were actually multiple printings for many of these issues, and the first printings were more valuable! Each printing after the first edition was notated by a roman numeral, next to the issue number and price on the top left corner of each cover. The cover art remained the same with each subsequent printing but the title logo color scheme changed for each issue’s printing. After realizing this the 2nd, 3rd and so on printings I had were tarnished in my eye. All of my "Doomsday!" issues were later printings, and not worth the paper they were printed on, and most of my 'Funeral' issues were the same. As the years went on, and the prices went down, I replaced many of my later printings with first prints, recycling the paper rags I had before.

Then CGC came along....

Around 2007 I decided to start CGC Registry set for this storyline, all 9.8, first prints only, yet by the early 2010's I re-discovered the later printings, becoming enticed by the thrill and challenge of trying to find these books in high grade. I love how unexpected all of this was, I know I never thought the later printings would ever be collectible, and I think it's safe to say I wasn't the only one.

Here are my CGC examples thus far, keeping the thrill of the hunt alive.

Here I go again!

P1030751.JPG.ca2473552be0176d8d569ec78384ddee.JPG

This book is difficult to track down, as of this writing this is only the third copy of this third printing to be graded 9.8. This book is now housed in my collection thanks to @Iconic1s, this early bird - or maybe it's just because he lives in a different time zone - sent me a text around 5:00 a.m. with a link for an eBay BIN that he noticed a few moments prior, I would have spit my coffee out but I hadn't started making it yet! I made sure to rub the sleep out of my eyes to be sure I saw correctly that the eBay BIN really was a Justice League America #69 Third Printing. It really was and I didn't waste another moment hitting the 'buy it now' button. I do get up that early every weekday but I don't always check eBay, if not for that text, I might have missed it as this book would not have stayed on eBay for long.

Man, these two look good together!

Now, if I could find a 9.8 fourth printing for less than a mortgage payment...

This is only the second 9.8 in the census for this second printing. The first 9.8 was graded in 2012, that’s quite a gap between entries.

These look really good together.

The fourth printing is VHTF, if another 9.8 for that one came out of the woodwork, that would be amazing. What would be even better is if two more Universal 9.8s appeared for the fourth printing, one for me and one for a friend.

Progress Update:

23 down, 17 to go, to get all of these multiple printings in 9.8. It’s still a long road ahead. I missed the very rare Superman: The Man of Steel #20 second printing by a few dollars back in 2020. I also missed Green Lantern #46 second printing last year, another tough loss, but life goes on! I’m really happy with the progress I’ve made over the last three years.

Please excuse me for being a newbie I just found this site today.

In 1993 I was in my early 20s and got really excited about the death of Superman series. I couldn’t believe they were going to kill superman and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.  I bought all of the comics as they came out following the numbered triangles.
Last night, following a list of the three series doomsday funeral, for a friend reign of the supermen, out through the end of 93, and into 94 where it started from one again.  The only one I am missing is funeral for a friend 1.
all of them are the first issue and a bunch have foil covers. I have a couple of the death of Superman black factory, sealed and back to life in the white plastic factory sealed. I have one of each that I opened so that I could read the comic. I was very careful with every one of them, and haven’t touched them cents. There is one with the cover that is slightly loose near the staple.

I see that you have greetings from this website. Does it really cost $25 each to get them graded?

my collection starts with man of steel 18 doomsday.

I even have some of the offshoots that are not on the list like steel number 1, super boy number 1.

this is really exciting

I think this is the list I was following.
The justice league, death of Superman does not even have a triangle on it. And there is a next edition in that series, which is black.

what do you guys suggest I do next?

Thank you

Will

Cool books!  I also collected the series as it came out and followed the triangle numbering across all the various titles.

If your goal is to acquire the best Death and Return of Superman set in CGC grades... forget it!!  Iconic1s has us all beat.  BUT, finding high grade (9.8) copies from this run can be done on the cheap for the most-part.  There are specific variants (second printings, third, fourth, newsstand copies, etc) that are harder to find than others and typically command a premium price.  Do the bag and boarding of your personal collection, but don't send these in for grading unless you have a sentimental attachment to those specific copies (or are VERY good at grading).

I would recommend checking out the registry sets that other collectors here compete in.  Here it is:

I was looking at Iconic1s set, the descriptions and pictures are a blast.  I am sure I will spend time looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions. Thank you for that.

I am at work now, I will have to go through the set book by book when I am sitting in front of my collection.

It is interesting that a lot of the covers are different from the covers that I have.

I saw what you guys were posting about people paying crazy money for these books and I got crazy excited. 😳

I needed one additional book, so I went to the comic book store, and I found the book I was looking for, as well as a bunch of other books from that series. I had a meeting that I had to go to, so I was in a hurry, I ended up picking up $50 worth of Books from that series, thinking that they were worth something.
I ended up going out into my car to take that meeting.  I went back into the comic book store, and the guy told me that most of my books were not worth anything. It was the second and third and newsstand copies that were worth more. It was the opposite of what I would have expected.

As you can see, I bought multiples of some of these books, hoping that someday they would be worth something. Now I am not sure what to do. I am thinking that I would sell the books as a complete set. They are all in really good shape. I was extremely careful when I read them and then they went into a box. Should I send the important ones in for grading? Which ones would those be? I have the ones in the white plastic bag in the black plastic bag from the death and rebirth of Superman. And there are a few with foil covers. should I just send in the good ones I have multiples of so that it is an entirely readable set?

I don’t mind making an investment if it makes it worth more in the end.

If I understand correctly, it is $25 to get it graded? If I send it for grading, is it in my best interest to have it pressed first? Pressing cost $10?

I followed the triangles through the rest of 1993 and pretty far into 1994. What should I do with those books?

Thank you. This really is fun.

I forgot to mention it, but two really big ones were added to the collection a few months back.

These illusive second printings were gifts from a great friend. I’m still floored by this amazing gesture. I still have a ways to go on the multiple printings, and most of the ones I still need are very hard to find and most likely will be very expensive if they come up for sale! Crossing these two additions off the list was a huge boost to my set.

Currently 1 of 2 in 9.8.

This guy should arrive next week, first 9.8 in the census.

A year or two ago, I bought a nice looking copy of Justice League America #70, 3rd printing on eBay. I had aspirations of following in @Iconic1s footsteps, who had made two 9.8 examples of this tough book through his own submissions. I was very happy for him but also, deep down inside, a little jealous.

The book arrived safely and looked beautiful. I thought I had a great candidate for pressing. A day or two later, I took a closer look and noticed a color breaking stress mark on the spine.

No way this copy would get the desired 9.8, even with a press.

Then last week, when I least expected it, a 9.8 third printing was listed on eBay, for a very reasonable price.

I would love to try and Iconic1s footsteps by submitting a raw copy of the 4th printing to CGC, and make a 9.8. The few raw copies on eBay right now do not look good. As of this writing, he is the first and only one to be successful, it took him several tries to get the lone 9.8 on the census - the 4th printing is not an easy book.

This is my childhood copy, from a Toys “R” Us two pack. The book looks good but the spine has several color breaking stress marks.

For my new JLA 3rd printing, it turns out the eBay seller is YouTuber James from Mint-Hunter Comics.

At about 1:54 he mentions the JLA 70, turns out the book was only listed for about four minutes before I snagged it.

I have enjoyed watching his videos over the last few years and I’m thrilled to have a book from him.
