  1. Tim, Just FYI, I'm pretty sure someone I know spoke to Doug directly and the word is there were not just two, but four people bidding around these numbers... so... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, as payment will be received I'm fairly certain.
  2. I'm happy for the buyer, I'm happy for the seller. Regardless of what I think of the purchase price, I don't want to ridicule someone for their purchase.
  3. Dude, all I can say is in' congrats on the sale. I truly hope you get paid.
  4. Brian, no matter how rich you might become, could you ever justify to yourself spending that sort of money on this book? Could you sleep at night if you did? I certainly couldn't. Seems to me there's a lot of folk who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Never in a million years. As to the relativism concept, yes some things are relative. I'm not saying all things and all morals and judgments are relative, but yes, how someone spends their money has no objective basis to call it "proper" or "improper" -- what I think you can do is come to a consensus whether a majority of people think it is a wise decision. I would never spend $100, let alone $12k on a NM 98. There are also plenty of people who thinking spending $5 on a comic book ever is a waste and stupid.
  5. Brian, do you still have the X-Men 207 9.9? I want to flip it to this guy I do.
  6. Let's not go crazy -- the price is ridiculous. I would never pay it. But it's not the end of the world either nor the collecting world. If the person has the money to spend and wants this "best" copy, then they are obviously willing to pay for it. Should it happen? Not in my opinion, but I can't buy into "with all the problems in the world" argument Nick, because if we go down that line of logic, we shouldn't be spending any money on comics because it's all too much in relativity to people's more significant problems.
  7. Since I already have two offers from two different dealers at $8500 for my Show 22 7.0, I think the 8.0 will be up near $20k.
  8. Congrats on the sale. The buyer must really know his grading. It would be difficult for me to ever buy a book of such worth unslabbed for fear of it coming back a much lower grade than expected or even worse PLOD. Did you attach any sort of "guarantee" to the book? yes, I guaranteed it would grade at least 8.5 and be unrestored (thumbs u It would be a great buy for under 30k (thumbs u think north I knew it.
  9. my "gut" is it will hit 9.0 from cgc (it was priced as such)... if the new owner will allow me, I will happilly reveal the sale price...stay tuned My observation and guess on pricing is partially based on the quote above -- priced as a 9.0 If priced as a 9.0, I'm thinking Rick got $38 - $42k
  10. pretty accurate, I would say (thumbs u probably the information I need to make a guess on what you got for the 9.0 -- a strong price, but then if 9.0 is the top graded copy, well, I'm not sure $40k or thereabouts is really that high.
  11. Congrats Rick. If it was a 9.0, sure it went through the absolute roof. If it was an 8.5, then I'm also sure it was absolutely ridiculous. There are predictions out there that this book will be approaching ASM 1 levels... in terms of value. Demand for this book is truly through the roof right now.
  12. There's an 8.0 in Mound City's auction coming up as well. The Show 22 is still trucking along. Once a major sale comes up for a higher grade copy publicly, things will really start to take off.
  13. I've had some shuffling with my copies and now I've got 3: Showcase 22 CGC 4.5 o/w Showcase 22 CGC 6.0 lt tan/ow Showcase 22 CGC 7.0 o/w
  14. That book is a stunner. You're right - it's a complete eyesore.
  15. Of course -- if I had any time I'd drive to your house. Listing them on the boards just saves me the gas.
  16. Could be happening already. The 9.4 GL 18 in the last CL auction went for a very strong price. I think Sinestro covers will be a bit of a fad, though. He doesn't quite have the cover appeal of say, a Joker. Well that's not fair, the Joker is a classic villain, Sinestro, while cool, ain't no Joker.
  17. Let's go back to pre Showcase 22 is the hottest book on the planet days. Showcase 23 in grades 7.5 or better was always one of the most desirable books to own for GL collectors because it was simply tough to obtain. Showcase 24, on the other hand not as tough. I doubt Showcase 23 will truly have the same run up but may experience some increased attention -- just based on the run up as a whole. I think that what we'll see is GL 1 getting some increased attention and then all early Sinestro covers following suit. Remember GL as a title really doesn't have that much in terms of great keys or even great covers.
  18. You know, even seeing that, I'd still put it at 9.8 given the rest of the book and taking into account the gross inconsistencies I've seen at 9.8s on squarebounds -- some with ugly glue rippling etc. I suppose if it was consistent all the way across, I'd go with 9.6 as a technical grade. That corner is, I suppose, the real problem.
  19. The real problem is, GL historically doesn't have a lot of keys. I think GL 1 will get some increased heat as people will start to turn their attention to that following the Showcase 22 run up. Other than that, maybe GL 16 -- and then I think you have to look at GL covers that have Sinestro on them. For instance, GL 9 is great book, first Sinestro cover. GL 8 is the only grey tone cover. But... books like GL 40 to me are duds. Great cover, but really not much of a "key". On the other hand, I really miss that Adams never did Sinestro in his run, but of course, at the time, GL really wasn't about star spanning action.
  20. I also agree... how this book isn't a 9.8 is beyond me. It's a stunning, stunning copy and would, I imagine, fetch an insane number at auction. It's the nicest 9.6 squarebound I've ever seen and the best example of this issue I've seen as well.
  21. Maybe this high price may bring a few more 5.0's or 6.0's out. I think $15000-20000 for the 8.0 Mound City copy looks reasonable now. Define "reasonable"! This book is currently driven by supply and demand. Collectors now recognizes that SC 22 page quality is normally crm/ow. This particular 5.5 has off-white pages, and as detective27kid said " On sc22 pq is a big deal if you are looking for a separating quality over other copies". This copy deserves a premium...but $3803.64??? Regarding the Mound City 8.0, this is the only publicly high grade copy available for sale and the rest is tucked away in collections. Below are examples of other notable Silver Age keys sales which I have mentioned before. Let's use BB 28 and Avengers 1 as a comparison. The 3rd highest graded BB 28 (which there is five) sold in Comiclink for $21000. Also, let's use Avengers 1 as a comparison. A 8.0 (5th highest and 23 copies) sold in CL for $26000 and a 9.0 (4th highest and ten copies) for $20000 again in CL. Showcase 22 is in high demand and there are less high grade copies available compare to their counterparts. I wouldn't argue that the price is unreasonable given the market. I'm just saying that the market is not being driven by reason, or at least by anything reasonable related to appreciation of comics. Call it irrational exhuberance! I would say that prices are being driven by demand, not supply. The supply a year or two ago was the same as it is today (actually less, because copies are coming out of the woodwork now). So why is the price suddenly going up? Because demand has gone crazy. And why has demand gone crazy? Because of pure speculation. People want to get a copy to invest in hoped for profits down the road (or maybe next week). I do agree...it's irrational exuberance! This SC 22 5.5 sold for double what a BB28 in 5.5 and one and a half time a Avengers 1 in 5.5. At this rate it is the second most valued DC Silver Age comic and this is not based on OSPG prices. Also, the data that Peewee22, the help with others, and I collected confirms the supply and the scarcity of higher grade copies. (thumbs u SC #22 should is the second most important DC SA key behind #4 in my opinion. B&B #28 is nice, but it is basically an earlier version of Avengers #1. I could buy the argument that B&B 28 is just a later version of All Star #3 (which obviously it is), but not that it`s an earlier version of Avengers #1. This completely dismisses its historical and influential role in the Silver Age and its direct impact on creating the Marvel era, which is something no other DC book can claim. It`s like saying that Batman is basically an earlier version of Moon Knight. If you`re going to go down that path, then you`re vulnerable to the stupid argument that the Marvel Zombies always use: what`s so special about Showcase #22, since it`s just the reintroduction of a character who first appeared in All American #16? Totally agree Tim, I think you could argue that without BB 28, there's no modern Marvel comics. Showcase 22 is an extremely important book... and while agree speculation is driving the prices, I think it's also that Green Lantern in general is hot and people actually want the book to some degree because it is a great book.
  22. Why do you even bother? Your board rep is permanently shot. Regardless of your inclusion or exclusion on the formal probation list because of some technicality, no one here is going to deal with you in the future. Too many broken deals, too many broken promises. It's time to fold up your tents and head on down the road....or not. I suppose you can keep banging your head against the same brick wall. Amen. It's all over. Nobody with any sense will buy from you or would want to. Belong on the probation list, don't belong on it, who cares, just go away, nobody wants what you're selling, and someone here will always make sure that if someone new makes the mistake of buying something from you, they will be fully informed of your past dealings. Period end of discussion, you can rant how it's unfair all you like, but it is reality.
