  1. I glanced at the box and saw only 70s and 80s stuff. Actually, the only reason I was asking was that it sort of reminded me about my first time down at the big SD Con back in the start of the 90's. Didn't know very much and didn't know any of the dealers at all at the time. Then I noticed this guy going from table to table showing a small stack of books to various dealers in the room. I clearly remember some dealers started following him around the room as he was going through this process. Sure seemed to have created a bit of excitement at the time and I believe our own @Crowzilla was also there at the time watching some of the action. Left the room after that and then saw him again about a hour later outside the main convention hall as he went outside to make a phone call. Decided to wait until he got off the phone to see if I could ask what all of the dealers were in a bit of a tizzy about. Definitely a super nice guy as he had no issues with showing me the stack of GA books with a few Plantinum Age books thrown into the mix. Apparently he was totally PO with the dealers as he got the impression they were all simply trying to low balled him on his books. Especially with Metro as Fishler was apparently supposed to bring a copy of the March of Comics #4 to the convention in trade for some of the books as he had been trying to acquire a copy of that book for the longest time. I guess this goes to show how popular Donald Duck was with some of the longer term collectors back in the day, plus the fact that it's probably not a good idea to give them the usual run around sometimes.
  2. Sadly, we lived through that exact same experience here for quite awhile a few years ago when one of my kids was trying to buy a place for herself. I believe she made something like over 10 offers on places (all at above asking price) before she was able to land a house of their own. Turned out to be an absolutely beautiful place for them to raise a family, even though it is half hour drive away from my place. It's good to actually see prices seemingly geeting back to normal with them coming in slightly below asking prices now with all of the new government regulations in place. But then again, you new know as a house 3 doors down from my place was listed last week and there is already a SOLD sign on it after just one showing last weekend. Reminds me a bit about the time back in the mid-90's during the big GA comic book rush when dealers were offering collectors multiples of guide for their HG books, with some of them even sight unseen if a pedigree. It was certainly different from when I originally started collecting vintage comic books when they would be offering you discounts to guide and then selling them to you for a slight premium to guide.
  3. The jagged reading edge on ASM 300 is another. GOD BLESS.... Yes, but the types of production defects which you are describing on all of these other books cannot be worked on in order to eliminate or minimize them. In the case of the production spine ticks with the Cerebus 1 though, they might want you to send them into their partner company in hopes of minimizing the impact of this spine defect. After all, CCG is a business entity and it only makes business sense to pay attention to your top and bottom lines.
  4. Well, greatly appreciate your response and giving it the old college try. Yes, with the old boards, I used to be able to copy and nest quotes from other pages, and then go in to insert the board member's name so that it would identify who the quote came from. With the new boards, no such luck. Maybe it's something that we should ask the Mods about and see if they have an answer for this quandary we seem to be in?
  5. thought it would be easy to figure out but I'm having problems. I can select it and quote and then right click to select all but when I paste it in it doesn't format the same. I'd ask RMA as he seems to be an expert on multi quotes That's a good idea. So, let's see if @RockMyAmadeus can provide us with an answer here or not?
  6. It's definitely a story with a happy ending when everybody concerned does well. Based upon previous readings of your story, I initially thought the whole thing had gone to your son as a down payment for his home. It's good that you was also able to take personal advantage of the AF 15 windfall to make some additional money for yourself plus pay Uncle Sam at the same time. I assume your son's portion must have only been for a portion of the down payment or is some of your good fortune also ruubbing off on him and he was able to luck himself into a good deal for his home. Not sure what part of the country you live in, but I was at this big Lunar New Year Festival event last week where they were trying to hawk some pre-build condos and you could spin the wheel to win prizes like a Bentley SUV, Porsche SUV, $280K gift card rebate, etc. if you signed on the dotted line. I was thinking even though the place was jam packed and there were quite a few $280K "winners", that still wouldn't even cover the down payment for the condo. It's still good to see the real estate market falling though, otherwise, they wouldn't have had such a big party with all the free food and door prizes for the attendees. If this was 3 years ago, the entire complex would have been sold out without the developers giving you any discount at all, and with anxious buyers still left standing in line to get in the door at the end.
  7. Although this is probably true for the time frame after Bob sold your copy for you, it definitely was not true for the months prior to Bob's sale of your CGC 5.0 graded copy of AF15. After all, how can any of us forget about CC's record setting price of $57K for this CGC 5.0 graded copy of AF15 back in March of 2017: https://www.comicconnect.com/item/700363?tzf=1 I strongly believe this particular sale here along with the CGC 9.0 graded Hope copy for $395K along with CGC 4.5 graded copy for just a shade over $37K all in the exact same auction paved the way for the acceleration in the red hot AF 15 market for the rest of the year going forward. Similar to how the sale of the CGC 3.0 graded copy of 'Tec 38 for just over $54K (or possibly double the then market rate on a PPP basis) in the same March 2017 CC auction apparently facilitated the almost instantaneous sale of Bob Storm's CGC 3.0 graded copy of the same book for $36K mere minutes after the CC auction had closed on the 'Tec 38. Especially since another boardie informed me that the book had been on Bob's website for several months at a substantally higher price before it was lowered to the $36K price point where it had continued to sit until CC's auction result. It's definitely a small world when it comes to the comic book market and the speed of information is very fast in today's marketplace with the technology that we have on hand.
  8. Book was dry cleaned and pressed, probably accounting for a half grade bump, if not a full grade minus addition of tape. So, as far as you are aware, there was none of that so-call "rolling" of the front cover over to the back cover to hide some of the more obvious defects?
  9. You mean that you just asked him for his SD Con badge and didn't even bothered to check out his box of comics? Especially since you never know back in those days. After all, it might have been a box of valuable comic books which he was trying to sell at the Con, but left in disgust right away when the dealers were trying to low balled him assuming that he didn't know anything about the value of the books at the time.
  10. Are you thinking about the music and lyrics to this song when it comes to California girls: As for me, whenever I am driving down to beautiful sunny California, I am always thinking about the music and lyrics to this song here:
  11. Hey Richard; Are you referring to smoking pot in the potty when you got back home to boring mundane Texas?
  12. The books they thought were rare then we now know aren’t. Like All Winners 19, for instance And yet, some of them still truly are, with books such as New Adventure #26, #27, New Comics 2, KDF #10, Wow #2, etc. Well, at least still up to this current point in time so far after 16 long years, although this could change going forward...........but most probably not.
  13. Well look at that! Lol. Thank you! And if you want to quote a chain of multiple posts like above click at the top of the first post and drag down to the bottom of the last post (2 in this case) and then click the 'quote selection' black box that pops up. Any tips on how to easily copy quotes from multiple pages? It was relatively easy to do on the old boards here before their big changeover, but haven't been able to figure it out on the new boards here yet.
  14. Well, I remember going up to check out this house when I was in the Denver area about 10 years ago: Sadly, I got there about 35 years too late to help the owners clear out their basement for them, as I would have willingly done it for free.
  15. Some of them have died. Although there have certainly been a few who have sadly passed away, I feel the 2 major reasons for these board members not posting anymore are as follows: 1) Many are no longer actively collecting anymore and probably see no reason to post on these boards any longer. Especailly with respect to many of the CGC generation of speculators in the BA to MA collecting ages who were just here for a short period of time in an attempt to hopefully make some fast and easy money; and 2) I still feel that we lost a significant number of boardies that used to post here prior to the major revamp with the CGC boards and so many of them just didn't bother to contact the CGC Mods to facilitate their migration over to the new boards. Personally, I myself didn't both to do it for the first couple of months, but once they got everything sorted out, I did and actually like the new boards since it allows me to keep better check of what posts I have read or not. I will admit that the copy and pasting of posts across various pages definitely worked a lot easier on the old boards though. Oh well, you really can't expect to have everything though.
  16. From your point of view, what's the major difference in thinking for boardies posting here 16 years ago as compared to their thinking today?
  17. Wouldn't you much rather have this classic one here to frame and hang in your home:
  18. I think there might be a bump in price if the new TV series is good. Any idea why the Swamp Thing TV series was cancelled so quickly after only the pilot epsiode was aired? Especially since I had PVRed the entire series along with the 1982 movie version featuring Adrienne B.B. Barbeau, and thought the TV series was quite well done. Made the mistake of watching the movie version after watching the TV series and needless to say, the difference in quality between the two was like night and day.
  19. Since they are charging the rather hefty sum of $20 for gate admission for this one here or the same amount as the CalComicCon last weekend with all of the great dealers down there, what's the chance that we will even see a single one of them up here next Sunday? This convention here is starting to look a bit similar to the Fan Expo that will be coming the week after, albeit a bit more sports related. Just wondering since they still don't seem to have a list of the comic book vendors that will be showing up for this one here?
  20. Yep, books like that are more about the history than price. This actually brings up a very good point as to why prices on books like these have gone absolutely nowhere over the decades. I still remembered when Overstreet first came up with a brand new section in his price guide for Promotional Comics / Giveaways some 20 years ago and then added in books like this Toy World Funnies and other similar promotional comics into his guide. Unfortunately, he also decided to take both Funnies on Parade and Famous Funnies Carnival of Comics out from the main section of the price guide and moved both of them into this new Giveaway section of the guide. I knew right away that this would be like applying the hammer of doom and would signal the death knell for both of these books going forward. Needless to say, not surprisingly and actually totally expected, while the later Famous Funnies Series 1 and the rest of the 218-issue Famous Funnies run continued to moved steadily upwards for a Platinum Age book during the past 20 years, the two earlier but now banished Funnies on Parade and Carnival of Comics went absolutely nowhere from a guide valuation point of view over the same time frame. To be more precise, they actually moved down in mid-grade guide valuation with the Funnies on Parade going down marginally, while the Carnival of Comics took a much more dramatic 40% downward hit. By moving them out from the main section of the price guide, this action probably left a lot of collectors with the impression that they were no longer being viewed as true comic books in the traditional sense of the word, but in the less desirable light of giveaways or premiums. Interesting to note that although the Heritage archives does indicate relatively higher grade copies of Carnival of Comics selling for discounts to then guide back about 7 years ago, there have been 5 more recent sales of this book during the past 2 years with all 5 of them sold at a premium to their guide prices. It would be interesting to see how a Funnies on Parade would do in today's current marketplace since the HA archives indicates the last 3 sales of this book took place back in 2014, with all 3 of them going for either large premiums or multiples to guide. I imagine it's only a matter of time until another one comes back out into the marketplace and we get a much more accurate idea of what its current valuation really should be.
  21. I am still finding a hard time getting my head around the huge runup in prices for both 'Tec 62 and 'Tec 69 over the past couple of years. Yes, they are both early Joker covers, but the covers themselves aren't necessarily that great on their own. Especially in light of the fact there are just so many other Joker covers in both of the Batman related series, with some possibly better than these 2 covers.
  22. Well, if you are going to go with Aunt May, then how about Ms. Grundy here from the Archie comic books: As compared to Ms. Grundy from the Riverdale TV series: Definitely very un-Grundy like behavior as what the long term Archie comic readers are used to. Heck, the whole Riverdale TV series is so very un-Archie like...........too wild as compared to the traditional Archie comics and probably too tame as compared to the Afterlife With Archie comic book series.
  23. +1 Yes, it's always a balancing act between supply AND demand as you have correctly stated. That is why although we have a huge and seemingly never-ending supply of Hulk 181's out there, the price continues to move up as the demand for this book during the past couple of years was even higher.
  24. If you are referring to a real life black superhero, then I am afraid that he's just been arrested on drug charges: https://globalnews.ca/news/6473130/phoenix-jones-arrested-superhero/
  25. Books like these are definitely meant to be read. All I can is that if you were lucky enough and managed to get these at $0.25 a shot, you should be ecstatic since that's an absolute steal of a deal for you.
