  1. Not really so much if CGC 8.5 graded copies of Rawhide Kid 17 can fetch over $10K in today's market place: https://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/rawhide-kid-17-marvel-1960-cgc-vf-85-white-pages/a/121732-11612.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
  2. Exactly what I mean..........worthless dead weight from a monetary point of view for 40+ years, but still a wonderful series to have and read nonetheless.
  3. You mean there's a chance that I can finally recoup my original purchase cost after holding onto this dead weight for well over 4 decades? Seriously though, with all of this talk about the Eternals, I decided to take a look through my boxes. I guess I must have really liked them since I actually have the entire run of 19 issues plus the Annual. Rather surprising since I usually picked up duplicates of the first few issues, but never really bothered to pick up anything after issue #10 for these "Moderns" that came out at the time. Looks like the entire run is still sitting in the original 5 poly bags which I put them in and still as minty fresh as when I first cherry picked them off the racks of the LCS. With all of this focus on the keys only though, I guess the last 18 issues are still not worth the time, trouble, and cost to slab them.
  4. The cocoon (and Warlock actually being named) appears in an end credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Are telling me that my Warlock related books might still have a chance to make me some money after all?
  5. Isn't it amazing how even the slightest hint of a potential movie appearance can suddenly turn forgotten 25 cent box books into highly sought after 3-figure books. Especially when all of the buyers appears to be speculators buying only for the purposes of hopefully reselling them at a higher price. Almost makes me wonder who the final big dollar buyer is going to be since I highly doubt any of the newly minted movie going fans is all of a sudden going to become big money comic book collectors. Whatever happened to all of the talk about Warlock having a big part in these Avengers and Thanos cosmic related movies or is that a dead issue by now?
  6. And whose fault is this to start with? It's especially easy to stigmatize a book when it's been branded by the grading company with a stigmatizing PLOD label, regardless of the type and extent of the restoration. They could have avoided this stigmatization if they had gone with a uni-colour label system combined with both a condition grading and restoration rating system right from the get go.
  7. Wow, $828 smackers for what is pretty much a common book. I assume the buyer must be a label collector and paying for the 9.8 label only. I wonder if he realizes that this copy was graded back in June of 2015 and with the tightening of the high end grading during the past couple of years, there is a high chance it would only grade out as a CGC 9.6 if resubmitted. Like they say, the old 9.8 is the new 9.6.
  8. Reminds me of this comic broker that used to be active in the hobby. Being a former coin collector who was used to collecting rolls of coins, he told me that he picked up 50 copies of this issue due to all of the advanced hype on the book. Not sure if it worked out for him though since the book really didn't move up all that much considering all of the uber HG copies sitting out there.
  9. A nice looking copy of this magazine here, but is there ever a bad looking copy? Was there a warehouse find or something for this book as there appears to be a ton of copies in uber HG condition?
  10. +1 That's exactly why they generally update their labels every few years. To catch all of the collectors with OCD who just need to have all of their slabs with the exact same labels. And then you get the old cheapo collectors like me who still have their comics bagged in blocks in those old poly bags from 30 to 40+ years ago.
  11. Does this mean that European collectors travelling through London can now drop off their books right in their London office for subsequent grading that will take place in their Sarasota office? If so, does this mean free postage, similar to dropping off books at a comic con which then get shipped back to their facility in Florida?
  12. I am not sure how I even got onto their mailing list? I assume somebody must have sold their mailing list with my mailing info to Heritage when they first started up way back when.
  13. Since it's now almost the end of April, does anybody here have any idea if this CGC office is now opened in London or has it been pushed off til a later date?
  14. Interesting. What was the restored grade? mod 4.0 ? Any idea what a Mod 4.0 would have gone for in today's PLOD challenged marketplace? It's quite conceivable that the it might have gone for less than the scraped away blue label Universal 1.5 grade it received in the end.
  15. Well, if that's the case, then you must be totally aghast at what this CGC 1.0 copy was able to fetch not just once, but twice in different auctions over the past couple of years: https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?referral=EAlist&id=666486&title=DETECTIVECOMICS https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=727871
  16. With so many quality GA books like the Action's, All-Star, Superman's, etc in this particular Monthly Auction, this auction appeared to be more of a cross between a Monthly Auction and one of their Event Auctions. Especially when CC usually always have their next Event Auction posted right after their last one has been completed. So far, nothing except for the 4 Walking Dead #1 reprints ever since their last Event Auction finished back in March. Makes me almost wonder if they ran into some type of scheduling problem with their Event Auctions?
  17. I've never changed my view on comics.I see the book not a label. Labels come and go. I always focus on the book. +1 A definite shift in thinking to a view that also allows you to apply your own common sense, especially when grading can tend to be rather inconsistent over an extended period of time.
  18. Again, it depends on the severity level. Did you see the 5.0 posted a few pages ago? I'd probably take that book over a chipped 6.0. Aesthetics, aesthetics, aesthetics...how the book appears to you and me. Roy; Highly doubt it and would definitely agree with PW that it really depends on the severity of the Marvel chipping. Same with PLOD's and GLOD's and yet there is still such a stigma against them, although definitely less than when CGC first started up as collectors are finally starting to get a bit wiser now. Yet we still see situations where a GLOD 9.0 copy of a HTF GA book with a clipped coupon will still sell for only half of what a raw VG copy of the same book will sell for. Go figure that as I guess once something becomes a stigma, it's usually pretty tough to overcome even though it doesn't really make sense sometimes.
  19. Probably so, when this CGC 4.0 graded copy with no Marvel chipping managed to fetched only $24K in yesterday's CC auction: https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=768336
  20. Wow, that's more than $10K less than 5.0's were selling for last year. Well, not quite the same thing since you are most likely referring to the CGC 5.0 copies with no Marvel chipping and which also presented much better than their assigned 5.0 grade. It's becoming quite apparent that how the book presents relative to its assigned grade is becoming a key determinant in the final price for many of these early SA Marvel keys. With this Marvel chipped CGC 6.0 graded copy also selling for $46,803: https://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=772380 it looks like the Universal 6.0 copy that just sold on CL is right in the ball park.
  21. I haven't really seen a GA bump ever since they tightened up the grading a couple of years ago when it looked like the other company was starting to gain market share. If anything, I find that the GA books have been graded even tougher than some of the more recent SA books. Of course, that;s just from a visual cover appearnace point of view since I don't have the actual book in hand.
  22. The same could be said of Archie 50, but in both cases the dominance of the GGA elements in the compositions make them stand out just a little more. +1 Although the B&V 40 is certainly a nice cheesecake cover, I am still surprised at all of the hype and price it's going for. Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that it appears readily available to some of the other earlier cheesecake covers that just doesn't show up in the marketplace that often. The perfect example being the Archie 46 which is a classic HTF early cheesecake cover with all of the girls seemingly parading into the classroom for Archie to rate and dream about.
  23. Saw that in Geppi's mahogany glass amoire inside his library during the Diamond International Galleries Grand Opening back in '95. I clearly remembered it because it was on side by side display with the Church copy of Suspense Comics #8. Both absolutely gorgeous jet black covers with colors that just popped right off the pages. If I remembered correctly, the Church Suspense 8 appeared to be a bit nicer to me because it clearly had the absolute bone white pages like it had just come off the printing press.
  24. They are seriously stepping up the monthly auction lineup in this latest one. A lot of nice books. Great run of early Superman, etc. Probably due to the fact that their next Event Auction is apparently going to consist entirely with books from the Second City Collection Don't know if this is going to be in there as an "extra" Event Auction (similar to Jon Berk's last summer) or just replacing the regular Event Auction that's normally schedule at this time of year. If the latter, than this means regular consignors will not have their books until the following Event Auction which will normally does not end until the middle of September.
  25. Less than what this copy supposedly "sold" for, unless it's also on Pedigree's auction site and Doug is "bidding" away like there's no tomorrow.
