I always thought Mark Schultz was very Frazetta influenced, but doesn't look like a knock off. The Kelley Jones comparison to Wrightson was a good one also. I believe Wrightson actually contacted Jones about finishing up his Frankenstein series for IDW when he could no longer do it.
Kelley Jones finished Frankenstein, Alive, Alive! for Bernie and Liz. Bernie had done a fair amount and Kelley built on that. It was an excellent job.

Christmas! I have a sub-theme centered on the non-existent Sugar and Spike 100. The main series went to 98 (in the US). In 92, DC issued #99 (DC Silver Age Classics Sugar and Spike 99), but there has never been a 100th issue.
To fill the gap and to honor, Sheldon Mayer's most famous characters, I've commissioned a few 100th issue covers. I try to find artists with an all-ages feel and have them create the cover. Sometimes I participate a lot (Fred Hembecks' were I had a very specific idea that he nailed) and sometimes very little (Katie Cook where I just asked for her Gronk characters with S&S).
This Christmas, Kathy arranged a tribute cover for Sugar and Spike #100 with Chris Giarrusso and Chris crushed it. He has a real feel for S&S and even recognized that that their dialog is not understood by adults and is represented by a dialog bubble that differs from the one that adults use.
The story is a crossover where our troublesome toddlers manage to get G-Man's magic cape and run away with it. G-Man and his friends are in hot pursuit.
Thanks to both Kathy and Chris for the wonderful cover.

BTW, Kathy said that Chris was easy to work with; that's not always the case on commissions. Thanks again, Chris.

Christmas has been very good to me. I’ve picked up four pieces to close out the year. Two featuring Sugar and Spike and two featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes
On the S&S front, we have a new S&S 100 cover (my third cover for the non-existent 100th issue) and a preliminary cover layout (unused so far as I can see) for a Sugar and Spike comic by Sheldon Mayer. On the Legion front, we have a battle between Light Lass and two members of the Fatal Five and a nice page featuring Dawnstar from the 2010 run.I’m particularly fond of the Giarusso S&S cover, he has a real feel for those kids and worked them into a scene with G-Man that really rings true. -
There were some marvelous examples of artwork available to view. Here are a few pictures of the people, but not much of the art; I'm a lousy event photographer.
I'm probably not going to get all the names right, but I'll try and I'll make any corrections.
Back: Will ? (wearing the black sweatshirt)
Closer: Phillip ? (in sandles), Mike Steenbergen (BCCC GM), Tom Coker
Leaning over the table: Roger Kiem from San Antonio (the longest drive)
Lower Right: Clayton Thorp
Left: Will Davis (my MD, yep my doctor is a comic collector!)
Right: John Johnson (no not my brother, but I do have one with that name, but a friend and co-collector of Will's since elementary school)Left: Clayton Thorp
Next: Dennis ? (hands folded)
Back to us: Don ?
Elbow on table: Richard Evans (BCCC founder and Mr. Bedrock here)
Mark Nelson was there, but I missed him the pictures so here's one from the web. He's a comic, Magic Cards, and D&D artist. Heck, he can draw anything.Carlo B and his wife Sarah (sp?) were there, but left before I took the picture. My bad.
I probably missed others - not to mention the staff that stayed late.Fun event with more art than you see at a lot of cons.

I found good prices by letting Google shop for me. I'd check every few days. I check on my HP Officejet 7612 (older model) and saw one for $131 with free shipping. I got mine for $189 and picked up at the local Office Depot.

I am ready! Sadly, I have six pieces to fit in five spots so though the first four are in like Flynn, the fifth spot may change right up to the last minute. Of course, I'm assuming nothing major for Christmas.

I actually got the Coolest Cooler, and they shipped mine like two years ago. I feel horrible about all the folks that still haven't received theirs. My Coolest is really great. What they should do is sell the thing to Igloo, or something.
I could have received mine IF I paid more for shipping. I decided to wait.

I'll be there. I'm on vacation from 12 Dec to 2 Jan! I'm assuming that it is the store on Westheimer and S. Voss. Is that right?

Robert Dennis and the rest can all handle tears. Even missing paper can often be repaired.
-
That's exactly why I add this comment. The three people named are excellent, but there's likely someone local who is as well and if you are shipping valuable art, local is nice.

The Steamworld Chronicles - The Constantine Quest pt.1 $75.00 SIMONSON SKETCHBOOK SETS
- The artist offered me his proof, but I didn't take it because it was unfair to everyone else. The writer said he has the books in his garage. This was a very early KS and I suspect he underestimate shipping costs and labor by a lot.

The Superiors:Villains Vengeance! $33.00 Print Copies of the SUPERIORS #3 and #4.
Estimated delivery May 2016- Clint seems to have moved on from an Injustice style comic to softcore porn comics. Every once in awhile, he'll update, but I don't think it will happen. Bummer. I liked the story.
On Life Support, but not yet Dead
One that does irritate a bit - though they have updates and I didn't pledge much and I haven't quite given up on getting - is the Coolest Cooler. These guys had a great idea, but really didn't have a finished design or manufacturing capacity. So, I'm still waiting for mine - closing in on four years later. They are shipping though and mine will ship when they have enough profit to pay for shipping.

Other books by Drew have been terrific especially the collected U.S.S. Stevens hardcover.
The rest are either on schedule or delayed, but shipping.
So, 2 failures out of 72 made pledges.
I don't know if this helps or not, but it is my experience.

I too dreamed of being an astronaut and my three years working for a NASA contractor on the Space Shuttle are a very pleasant (if distant memory) so I can understand your thrill. Congrats, @Brian Peck.

My favorite CrossGen book (and I liked most of them a lot) was Ruse by Mark Waid and Butch Guice. The stories were fascinating and the art was spectacular.
Recently, thanks to a Kickstarter to reprint Swords of the Swashbuckers to raise money for Bill Mantlo, I received a commission that I’ve long wanted - Simon Archard and Emma Bishop.Click the image and enjoy! -

Received it today and the darn page is bent from the mail delivery. Not a complete fold over but a good 45 degree bend. Tips on flatning.. if at all possible?
Send it to Robert Dennis, Gordon Christman, or Tracy Heft.

Has anyone here ever sold their commissioned pieces? How do you typically price them?
I think the best you can expect is 40% of what you paid. At least, that's what I tell my family.
There are exceptions in both directions based on character and artist, but often times they are too personal to be commercial.
My "L'il Legion" by Yale Stewart will never pay off as an investment, but I really enjoy it.
on the other hand this Shadow piece might be worth about what I paid for it because Kaluta doesn't produce a lot and the character is strongly associated with him (at least if you are of a certain age).

These two were obscure enough to baffle me when I got them from the Hero Initiative back when memberships came with sketch cards. I had to rely on the Vast Unpaid Research Department to identify them
I knew I recognized this one, but couldn't place the name. Click and learn.
This one I had no clue at all. Click and learn. -
FYI - Dave McKean is looking for OA to Arkham Asylum.
