I got the pencils for $X and the ink page is priced at $2.5X. That is, if the pencils were $500 the inks only page is $1,250.

While waiting for this page, another one (pencils & inks on same board) came up by the same penciller but different inked that I HAD to get as well, so I got that one first.

Was it a McNiven Wolverine?  Because he works that way on the pencils, illustrating each panel on a separate paper.  There was an awesome Wolverine just on ebay, that I lost ( congrats if it was to you (thumbsu )

So to say the pencils are all digital, seems a misleading.  I considered this quandary myself.  But since I didn't win the auction, I no longer have to worry about buying the inks xD

  2. My 2020 (and beyond) goals are

a published Milo Manara strip (ideally from Click)
    a Alessandro Barbucci Catwoman commission
    a Mazzucchelli Batman piece
a Kelley Jones page or commission with Batman or Catwoman
a Bill Sienkiewicz page or commission with Batman or Joker or Catwoman
a Ditko page (likely from Valiant or another later project)
a J Scott Campbell Danger Girl page or sketch

and especially - to stay focused on my goals, and review goals before any purchases.

The Rocketeer page went for so low! What happened?

    lf.jpg

In 2014, it was listed at Galerie9art.fr for 9,800 Euro.  But went unsold there.  Only the great Betty pages sold from the Gallery.  The rest, including Felix's cover, were sold later.

Four years ago (2016), Albert listed the unsold Gallery pieces, most in the $2 - 4,000 range.  I grabbed a page from Albert, with a few Bettie panels, which had been listed for 8,500 Euro at Galerie 9.

This was one of the few pages with Rocketeer in costume, from the issues being offered.  The pages were reasonably priced, and far (far) below what the french Gallery had listed.

I really appreciate everyone's kind words.  Just one more update -- my Bagley commission arrived, very happy with it and love the dark pencils.  Bags went above and beyond... see that little TM next to Spidey's face!

Venom cravings satisfied, everything has come full circle.  Now back to the much more affordable Frazetta for me. :kidaround: :jokealert:

    Whoa!

Out of curiosity, when did you sign up with Spencer/Mark, and did you end up going for the recreation level  ?  Well worth it!!

I also have a piece coming, and wondering what I should expect for the wait.

Is he still a prominent figure in modern comics or do we classify him in the "where are they now" category (shrug)

Wikipedia tells me that he was Image president, before Erik Larsen, from 1999 - 2004.  He brought diversity to image (not just superheroes) highlighted by publishing Kirkman on both The Walking Dead and Invincible.

Currently he heads his own division of Image, Shadowline, Inc., which publishes Rat Queens, Memoirs of A Very Stable Genius and more. and more. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Hero Initiative

Also, he's 10 to 15 years older (!!) than the other Image creators, so it's possibly he's slowed down/moved on from penciling.

Wow, what a great page! I remember  when this book broke up there was a lot of concern about how oddball many pages looked, since Everett was late and other artists had to finish the pages (iirc,Ditko was involved), but this one is really 100% on-target.  I love the Golden Age feel to it.

Fascinating, I'd never heard that.  How long ago was it broken up?

Congrats to the OP on a grail piece!

  7. looks like half the items were unsold.  Maybe making opening bids start at the lower end of their estimates , will deters bidders.  I was shocked that a Batman Returns page (movie adaption) was estimated for $1000+, and then sold for it.

My art collecting has slowed  during the last year and I haven't dealt with any dealers lately except for in person at Cons(no tax). I understand that the auction houses have all started taxing their sales but recently I tried a new internet dealer and found that they were automatically adding sales tax to the purchase . My question is: Is that the norm now for internet purchases from a dealer to charge tax?

    Hi,

Not in my experience.  But charging a % for paying with paypal, is a becoming the new norm.

I actually paid $65 for the pencils and $175 for the inks. If you were to go by the formulas people have posted Butches pencils should have been $144 and Brian's inks $96.

    Interesting.

Are the pencils and Inks both on full 11x17 size boards?

Did you consider just getting the inks, and skipping the pencils, just curious.

Wild. I swear in late 2018 I passed on a HB cover for $5k...(Thought it was just too much.)

Tell me what you think I paid for each. The total of the combine the 2 pieces is $240.

    Butch Guice Pencils - $100

Brian Theis' inks over Blue Line.- $140

Because for these pages, I think the inks display so much better than the pencils.

  11. I have had success with contacting this year, and last - just prior to Heroes con (where he was setting up), with semi-daily replies.  I think it really depends on which art/artist you are inquiring about.  He keeps some of the art with him, while other artists keep their own inventory.  Arranging to pickup art , that he happened to have on-hand, was a breeze.

But whenever he has to reach out to his artists, there can be a long (several week) delay.  Plus artists can loose track of their own art, either selling it or misfiling it at home, and Spencer will not update you while the artist is searching.

From ComicLink, Sept. 2019. (Got the date wrong. Auction ended at $5400.)

OH yeah - nice find.  You'll have better luck at auctions, than trying to pickup covers directly, in that price range.

Maybe this didn't have enough HB for potential buyers?  I bet someone lost money on that sale.

His HB pages sell for 3k+, so a cover for 5.4 is a good buy.  There's a sketchbook cover on comicgarden.dk for about 5k.

  14. Just to echo, while I don’t follow Vess or Sandman art, I have an acquaintance interested in Sandman Vess pages, and 15k for a Sandman 75 page (featuring Morpheus) isn’t out of the question. Morpheus pages from 19 go up from there (20k+). Your page has Goldie, the brothers, young Harry Potter, and Phantom Stranger. With some iconic Morpheus shots. 7-9k makes sense, and if it’s a grail, a few thousand might be a hurdle worth tackling.

Sometimes when I see “grail” prices, I have to pass and accept it wasn’t a grail for me, but will find a home in someone else’s collection.

He is not your Aunt Moy.

    Fixed it for you

He has nice art, especially art that premieres at shows. Ive found him unlikely to negotiate price, but have no complaints on service. Over 15 years I’ve got art for $30 from him (my first purchase), to several thousand dollars, and his responsiveness was always good.
