  1. Tales Of Horror #8 I have a sub collection of books that could be titled "Nature Getting the Better of Man". All of the books show the beasts taking the upper hand and coming out the better. A lot of the time, the animal is exaggerated in size and shape to make it look more menacing. I love this artistic interpretation. This is one for that stack. The story inside features this very scene and is drawn pretty well, though nowhere near as eye-catching as this cover. (Sorry for the glare on some of these scans!)
  2. I can totally see this point however Rick is the center of the story. It began with him and we rarely leave his viewpoint. Plenty of stuff still manages to happen around and without him. Even though Rick has lost a lot, I'm sure Kirkman can come up with plenty of things to take away......think about it. The one thing I've learned from this series is that no one is safe, including Rick.
  3. Good job! That is probably the best cover in the series and seldom goes for guide. It also has that terrific Walter Johnson splash panel. bb Excellent cover and splash page. Some really nice drawings going on there. Lots of action and very solid!
  4. Black Cat #53 I got a really great deal on this book from my LCS. After a discount and sale they had, I got the book for $16. It was a wall book and the color is a bit faded but I actually don't mind in this case because the cover turned sort of a nice olive green and has a nice limited pallette look to it. And for $16, I had to grab it! Even though this book is all reprints of earlier stories, they were all new to me. There's a Bob Powell and a Rudy Palais story in here too.
  5. Black Cat #40 Quasimodo lives!! Another cover I was totally blown away by. The purple background and yellow wisps of wind adds a strangeness to this unsettling scene. Anytime you've got a large creature and a small pile of humans running away in panic, you can't go wrong! The detail on the giant, especially the face, is remarkable. Thanks to Bunky Brothers for the book! I also included a pic of the original cover art I found for sale on ebay. It credits Joe Simon as the artist but looking closely, I was thinking maybe Rudy Palais when I saw the exaggerated sweat/slime drips. What do you guys think?
  6. Sick books Triston!! That Super Mystery cover has the "decapitation with a paper cutter" theme.
  7. Thanks for the welcome everyone! Adamstrange, That "Illustration" magazine is amazing! I've been lucky to of gotten every issue since grabbing #1 off the rack in a comic shop down here in Orlando back in 2001. Dan Zimmer really knows how to put a quality mag out! I read that issue #18 when it first came out but never made the connection to the Ziff-davis rags. Thanks for posting and reminding me. I'm totally going to reread that one.
  8. Black Cat #30 I wanted to get this issue of Black Cat because it is considered the first of the Horror theme within the title. It's not the best cover out there but there's just something charming and very old school comic art about it. The inks and what color there is really pops off the white background. Lee Elias is quickly becoming one of my favorite non-EC Horror artists. When I first saw his work, it reminded me a lot of the great Jack Davis, but the more I see, I am favoring him more because of his far less humorous take on horror. Lee Elias also has drawn some of the best key issues out there. Both the Black Cat and the creepy critters that are literally pushing her out of her own book are drawn with a simple economy and are still very expressive. I particularly love the bug on the bottom with the human head and the tentacle coming out of the fish/bat arm.
  9. Although, these Ziff-Davis books are often considered more SciFi than Horror, I am including them into my collection because 1). There aren't that many and 2). These covers are friggin incredible!! Many thanks to Jimbo for selling me this amazing copy which has unbelievable colors and gloss. I picked this up right after getting my Startling Terror #11 which contrasts it nicely. Some of my favorite things about this book: -Painted cover. I am a huge fan of Pulp cover illustration and I love seeing it on a comic. I think Norman Saunders was credited for this one but it looks a little tight for him. Maybe someone here knows who did this one?? -Flowers. The cover has flowers on it. How often do we see such well painted flowers on a Pre-Code book? At super quick first glance, this looks like a romance book until we see the robot dude and then the evil looking alien at the controls. -Did I mention the evil looking alien? And oh yeah, he's drooling too!
  10. This is one great undead thread! After a decade of casually tracking down all the single EC reprints, I have finally turned a collecting eye towards all the other cats in Precode Horror. There are some gems among this bunch and these boards along with The Tales Too Terrible To Tell books have really opened up my blistered eyeballs, along with my wallet to these books. The last 3 months have been fun putting together the beginings of my Precode reader collection, about 20 books, many I would consider "classic". I get books in the condition I can afford them and love getting high grade books when I can, but I also enjoy a good deal so the conditions in my collection will be mixed. My goal is to get a sampling of all the titles and then decide on which runs to go after. I am going to post the books as I get them starting with the first.... Startling Terror Tales #11 This comic and this exact copy shouldn't be a stranger on these boards. I have seen this book posted by at least 1 other board member. I picked this up a few months ago from Phil (Vtcomics) in the For Sales Thread. This book was my personal gateway into non EC Precode books. Being a fan of the macabre and having a fear of spiders, how could I not fall in love with this cover? Having a skull head on the beast is just inspired, and adding blood dripping from its mouth is the icing on the cake. I even love the condition this book is in. Bits and a few chunks missing from the edges, this copy looks like the spider monster attacked the book itself, even staining the bottom right corner with some venom, used no doubt to take care of the poor victim on the left. Speaking of which, notice some of the greenish coloring from his shirt creeping onto the side of his face. Makes it look rotting.
  11. Love this cover! I've picked a few of these Black Cats up over the last month as I've put together the start of a nice Pre-Code reader collection. I think that the Harvey books had a lot of nice, err.... I mean horrid covers!
  12. I have an opinion that the Wasp was the hottest female in the Marvel universe. She was always trying to get intimate w/ Pym who was always so stuffy. She was only a teen-ager when they met and what was Pym? 35? And didn't they live common-law at first? Until Gwen came along, she was the sexiest. I agree, one of the hottest. Add the Black Widow to that list too! Brunettes
  13. WOW! That is one excellent looking book! Congrats!
  14. I bid on the trimmed 5.0, but it left me in the dust. It's a sharp copy and the trimming is minor.....wouldn't have minded getting it.GOD BLESS... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) (thumbs u P.S. That 9.4 FF 6 is a REAL toughie in that grade....someone will be lucky to get it....whatever it sells for. I still have my 5.0 NOT trimmed for sale Steve selling an FF1 5.0? whats the pq? Didn't you just get a 5.0 FF #1? You posted a great story about acquiring it.....right?
  15. WOW! Nice book Steve. Rick The nice part about collecting an FF run all in 9.0, is that it forces you to take your time and smell the roses! Best of luck with it! You should put up a gallery link in your signature , like Count is doing with his ASM run, so everyone here can see this collection amass. (thumbs u
  16. That's because it's not really Reed! That #10 is friggin jaw-dropping!!! Awesome copy. Better than my low grade copy whose lower left corner was a meal for a few paper bugs.
  17. Sharp looking book! I would of bid on this had my birthday been Aug. 27 (It's Aug 22...so close!) Date stamps used to bug me but I've been lightening up on them. This is one that is perfectly placed and really adds a bit of charm to the book. IMO.
  18. Wow! beauty of a book! (thumbs u This is in my top 5 covers for ASM. *By the way, you better watch yourself. Some of those corners look so sharp, you might get a paper cut through the case! I'd love to have a copy like this. Mine has a coffee cup ring on it.
  19. rube11, I almost picked up your undercopy of FF#20 from ebay, but passed. I did however pick up that excellent FF #22 that you posted up there! Great book! Thanks!
  20. Leaping spiders Count! You are really on a role! At this rate, you're gonna finish the whole run upgrade by next week! Seriously, excellent looking books! Well done!
  21. Yes! However I still need DD #2 to finish my run of #1-230.... I started with the Essential Vol 1 but the rest have been read from the originals themselves. Once I hit #50, I said let me go to #100. Then it was like, well I know I want to read the Miller stuff so I figured I'd just keep going. A few clunky issues in there, but all the same, I've been enjoying them so much! (Gene Colan rocks!!) I'm also doing the same thing with FF (though I'm stopping at #126 here) and on ASM which I will read up until around #350....But DD will be the series I complete first! I'm not sure right now if I want to continue up past #250 until #380.... What do you think? I know I would like to start picking up the new/current DD issues. The art in them looks pretty sweet!
