  1. Perhaps. I haven't corresponded with him in probably over 10 years, and stopped following these once I thought I had a complete set. I checked with Doug this week and asked about his reasoning for not listing the "unconfirmed" DC Whitmans. If it's true that he was the source of those issues being on the initial STL then I asked why he doesn't have them listed on his site at all. He provided his update on DC Whitmans from 2014: There's never been a Whitman variant issue so rare that no one can turn up a copy or image in 10-15 years of hunting. This info from Doug reinforces my position on these issues -- I don't think they exist. Thanks for checking in with him. I don't think they exist either, and would prefer no new ones ever show up in the future. On a related note- (sorry metarog, I couldn't resist ) I knew this would show up again... oh well. Happy New Year Harry!
  2. A slabbed 8.0 sold back in August for around $80. I was offered $250 for my NM awhile back when only a couple had been discovered.
  3. I finished my 30 cent variant set 10 years ago so my opinion may be out-of-date but I'll put in my 2 cents here. I put together my own rarity list based on my experiences and FD is right on except for a few that I had a lot of trouble finding in decent shape. Also I didn't have any troubles finding the Jungle Actions and in fact found some nice copies early on in my 2 1/2 year quest to complete the set. I agree that MOFK 39 was very tough and along with MTA 29 and Marvel Tales 68 I would add to the bottom tier. Chamber of Chills 23 was very difficult in grade so I might move that one up to the middle tier. I would also put the Dr. Strange 14 Orange Starburst variant in the top tier but that is a special case that not everyone needs for a standard complete set but is a fun addition. It was great to talk about variants again after so long and good luck to all trying to complete a set.
  4. The swinging Spider-Man logo without any text is foolproof except for a Spectacular Spider-Man 213 giveaway with the same logo.
  5. Not to my knowledge and none are in the 1992-1994 catalogs except for the DC Collecting Kits which I believe were just regular Newsstand editions but no DC Vintage packs are in the listings.
  6. There are a couple others with no logos that have identifying characteristics... All the 1993 MMEs are a duller gray than the originals and have a slightly lighter shade on the right borders. The Avengers 4 has a gray border all around similar to MMEs. The 1992 Hulk MME is of a much lighter gray than the original and the "facsimile" in the M logo is harder to make out. The others are much tougher to ID without seeing the insides but will be much glossier than the originals.
  7. That is the article I wrote on the 3 MVP sets for the STLcomics gallery way back when. These sets are near and dear to me and I have all 3 sets in Minty condition. They can be a pain to put together but luckily I grabbed 2 of them complete. I even have the JC Penney catalogs they were featured in. Here is a link to the original write-up via the Wayback Machine- http://web.archive.org/web/20120504021151/http://stlcomics.com/gallery/jcpenney_stridex/
  8. This one isn't a Whitman, but comes from Modern Comics. I've always understood that these are the same folks who published Charlton reprints with a blue and white Modern logo, and sold them in packs. That is helpful, thanks. I wonder why Marvel would have Whitman distribute some, and Modern Comics distribute others during the same time period? Any idea what the 'MP' logo over the price stands for? Modern Promotions... they did indeed do the Charlton reprints in the late 70's and the some Archie Giant-Size issues as well. Here is a link to an Archie with Modern Promotions info on the back cover. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Archie-All-Star-Special-1975-Giant-Spectacular-Comics-160-page-1st-Prt-GD-VG-/401133121041?hash=item5d6565ae11:g:NeMAAOSw1S9WgXPe

  10. Wow, now that is a rare find! Congrats!
  11. Thanks for the information, and a very accurate prediction. Listed and sold in 10 minutes! That's because Metarog is the man! Aw shucks... Hi Reg!
  12. I have Avengers 147 variant as a 3 on my 1-5 rarity scale so it is about middle of the road scarce. In that condition however it is desirable and should sell quickly.
  13. Wow, nice job finding these... can you post them up for a visual record?
  14. The Goblin magazine 1-3 by Warren had full color comic inserts of Philo Photon and the Troll Patrol.
  15. Here are the identifying features of the Hulk MME from my old STLcomics write-up... First of all the cover is much lighter gray and you can barely make out "Facsimile Edition" in the "M" logo above the price. The interior pages are also newsprint-like paper and not slick paper like the regular edition... all of the ads are otherwise identical.
  16. Glad you resurrected this topic since the StlComics forum went down some time ago. I know Jerome has several and we had pics of all except one or two in the IG. I saw two or three within weeks of each other years ago and not a one since. Very hard to find variants...
  17. Is STL officially gone? Is this one of the homes in exile...? It looks like STL is gone... I am very saddened about it and I am still unsure why exactly although the forum has been a ghost town for some time now. What I will miss the most are the variant cover galleries and write-ups along with the interactive gallery. I put many hours into those but beyond that they were great references and will be missed.
  18. Welcome to the Club PDX... super nice set of Colts you have there. So how many confirmed complete sets are there now? I think around 10 or so.... I used to have a list but it was years ago... Maybe Harry knows? Regardless, congratulations!
  19. That is a British Pence copy of the issue sold in the UK. They are generally less valuable than the US priced copy for some reason. Here is a nice little article on them- http://stlcomics.com/columns/maneevent/I/
  20. Roger is the man! Thanks Reg... we have to help each other out when we can. I have to start looking for the rest of these in earnest as I'm only about half way through.
  21. It has the Ghost Rider in the UPC- http://stlcomics.com/cover_gallery/data/media/544/T2eC16RHJGE9nm3qW4eBRJFI2BWbg60_57.jpg
  22. For my set I placed the cut at 1993... essentially once Marvel started putting "Direct Edition" into the UPC I stopped considering them Copper. The vast majority of the 2nd/3rd prints are from 1990 to 1992 anyway. The exception may be the Hulk 377 3rd print from 1994 as the original was from 1991. BTW, does anyone know if there are any cover differences between the Nam #1 1st and 2nd prints? I can't seem to tell them apart online. I don't think so. I have multiple copies of each and I've never noticed a difference. And the 2nd print copy in the indicia almost looks like it was printed separately as well. Somewhat odd. Thanks guys, does the 2nd print have another month or year from the 1st print? I don't recall if this was a big seller in 1987 but 2nd prints were rare back then so I wonder is this was done immediately after the 1st print and even before the 1st prints were distributed?
