Andrew. Allow me to break my "vow of silence", as it were, for a second, because you're taking some very aggressive shots at me, none of which are justified. When I first responded to your drawing, I had no idea that you had no idea how the mechanics of Gen 2 cases (which is what you have) worked, so I was reminding you...yes, with my "crude" drawing...that what you had drawn was physically impossible without A. popping another corner post, or B. (and infinitely less likely) warping and damaging the inner well and comic inside. Most people I know who spend $$$ on slabs have seen one or two cracked out, or have done it themselves, or at least watched a crackout video on the internet, to familiarize themselves with how the product they're putting so much trust in works. You don't need to crack a 4 or 5 figure slab to do that.
And now, you're angry...again...because you didn't understand what you were dealing with, and when someone gently corrected you, reminding you of the properties of the inner well (and not knowing you didn't know those properties)...with a picture, no less, which is about as non-confrontational as it gets...you immediately assumed bad faith, immediately assumed someone was "making a joke at your expense." But nothing could be further from the truth. I don't need to be "right" at the expense of others. No, I want everyone to be correct, so that everyone works from a position of knowledge.
I am a buyer AND seller of slabs. It is not only in my nature to want to be factually correct about the things that interest me, as a matter of personal pride, but it is in my business interests to make sure that misinformation about slabs doesn't proliferate. While everyone was praising your admittedly excellent drawing, they had missed the fact that there was a glaring error in it: the idea that a comic is not sealed into the inner well, and can simply be "tilted" and "pulled out" if one corner post is broken. That is not correct, for ANY generation of slab.
My goal wasn't to make you feel stupid. My goal was not to anger you. My goal was not to belittle you. My goal was not to "tweak" you. My meme about geometry was a very gentle poke about the physical impossibility of your drawing. My goal isn't...and I cannot emphasize this enough...to "shoo anyone away", but to make sure everyone goes into comics with KNOWLEDGE, because knowledge is power. People who know what they're doing are much, much less likely to be scammed, taken advantage of, or, as in your case, assume they're being taken advantage of when they're not.
My goal was to bring you to understanding, and prevent MISunderstanding in others who, like you, don't know the mechanics of these cases, how they're designed, and how they function, and might look at your drawing and internalize it, thinking what you drew is possible. It is not. It never has been. And it's important that that idea was corrected.
So, just so you know: for Gen 2 (which is what your slab was) slabs, the inner well is nearly the entire length and width of the case, and it is divided into two parts: the bottom part where the comic sits is completely sealed by a sonic weld on all four sides and cannot, outside of QC issues, be opened without cutting on the inside of that weld. The top part contains the label, and is lightly welded into the label on both sides, while the top is unsealed and open.
I get it. You're a very educated and talented man. You spent a lot of time and energy getting to where you are. And no one likes to be corrected, especially in public. But there are a lot of people who know a lot more than you AND me about many subjects here. And there's nothing wrong with that. Instead of assuming bad faith, perhaps just asking "what do you mean by that?" would smooth out the rough spots that may not actually even exist. Everyone has something they know that others don't, and learning is a lifelong process.
I hope my explanation brings clarity, if not reconciliation.

Stu was just a harasser who was banned from this CGC forum some fifteen years ago (although he delights in constantly reregistering here under different aliases).. He was the only posting member at Comics Corral who didn't welcome me when I introduced himself. Then his first response to me was a snide remark about my necro posting. And he hated all the pictures of my comics and other collectibles that I posted upon the premise that it was wasting bandwidth. He would periodically attack me like a mad dog and I'd then be forced to respond by dissecting his every remark.
They used to have a system for rating accounts similar to the old star ratings on this forum.
Stu cried like a baby to the moderator when I kept giving his account over there a low rating.

Unfortunately I was out of state when this package was delivered. By the time I got home, opened the package, and discovered the broken pieces of plastic inside the case, more than two weeks had passed. So I get to ship it back to CGC to get this problem corrected and I get to pay for it. More that $60.00 out of my pocket to pay for their screw-up. Not happy.
20+ years to reach a horrible level of quality control and craptastic customer service policies.
Good job, CGC ! ! !

Turns out, the brick of slabs was wrapped in just a single layer of bubble wrap. This wrap also had a big portion where there were no bubbles because of the perforated area on the wrap. They also put a single layer of loose bubble wrap underneath, but it also had a big section of no bubbles. There was no other filler in the box to provide protection. As a result, there was about an inch of space around all sides, and a three inch gap of space at the top, so the books were able to slide and rattle around during the entire trip. All five slabs had damaged corners because of this lousy packing job. Every slab had shards of plastic inside as well. The actual box had no damage, which just tells me that the lack of padding and filler was the problem.
They are going to do a reholder for these, but I am worried I will just get stuck with the same person as before who has no clue how to properly pack slabs. Does CGC have a way to trace this back to the employee who did the packing? If so, is there ever any accountability? Magazine slabs are going to be a lot heavier than comic slabs, and a single layer of bubble wrap with no filler inside is not going to be enough.
If only someone could print the above post out and insert it into the shipping managers rectum (so it's close to their brain).
People spend a lot of time, effort and money to search out copies worthy of sending into CGC...and then CGC sh*ts on them like this.
A quarter of a century in business....and THIS is the best they can do?
25 years of "dialing it in"....just to have the last guy in the assembly line say "f**k it".
After that amount of time, this isn't something that should have to be "worked on". Nobody in shipping throws 5 CGC graded books in a box, mistakenly covers it with a single piece of bubble wrap, and thinks it will be fine. The person that does that just doesn't give a damn and needs to be shown the door.

The "books" are right side up and undamaged......there are no newton rings......the labels have the correct information on them......and there are no pieces of sharp plastic encased with the books.
Can CGC hire this guy to help them get their sh*t together?

Ebay seller seems like an honest guy that got duped with these fakes. Before these listings were canceled, he posted the following note to each auction:
"Please do not bid. I believe this is a fake. I am trying to cancel this auction but ebay wants to charge me over 100 dollars to cancel, even if its because its a fake !. If you already bid please retract your bid. I would like the auction to end with no bids. If someone does win I will contact them and have them cancel the sale. I have been on ebay a long time and don't want to sell fakes and ruin my name. Thanks"
It's possible he just doesn't deal much with graded comic books.

Flake and Cantina can't be the same person. They work together on a little thing called a wine mixer.
Perhaps you've heard of it? The Cantina Wine Mixer*?
Do you all even understand what that is?
It's the Cantina effing wine mixer!
POW!
It's the biggest comic book lawsuit event...in the western hemisphere...since 1997.
POW!
They have to sue, or settle, with at least 80 comic related companies there to make their nut.
POW! POW!
* not affiliated with the Catalina Wine Mixer.

Price appears to match up with the book mentioned in this thread.
And I'm thinking the thread title is in reference to this post made in another thread.

There is no way that's a legitimate news article.
It didn't start out with "BIF.......BAM!.......POW!" and the author patting himself on the back for thinking of such an "original" opening line.

Apparently, the Key Comment for this issue used to be simply "Classic cover", but at some point was updated to "Historic Atomic radiation cover". From the imagery on the cover, it does appear conclusively that it depicts firefighters at an oil well, and is not related to radiation. The Key Comment has now been changed back to "Classic cover."
From Domo Arigato
Not sure were this Action Comics #61 notation error originated (Overstreet?).....but it's not correct.
Superman is not fighting atomic radiation on the cover. He's fighting an oil well fire. How do you tell?:
The four huge oil drilling rigs in the background.
The massive fire and black smoke shooting out of the hole in the ground (why would atomic radiation cause fire and smoke to shoot out of the ground?).
The men are not wearing radiation suits. They are suits used for fighting oil well fires to protect them from the flames and intense heat (Link to fire fighting equipment....see an image of a similar suit below from that linked page).
You can see the exact same type of oil drilling rigs (and fire) in the picture at the bottom of this post.
The comic is from 1943...well before the first detonation of a nuclear device, and before the general public was even aware of them.
Edit: For those thinking this sounds familiar.....I discussed the same topic in this thread two years ago.>>
Thanks, Mike!
That one always bothered me on such a cool golden age cover.

Not trying to pile on, but just out of curiousity as well. Since you've been a board member in here for almost 10 years, I would assume you have collected slabs for at least that long. How have you previously never managed to see the older slabs with the wavy labels and the Title/Grade sticker on top?
