I’m just curious. I bought this CGC 9.8 white pages Daredevil #160 off of e-Bay the other day and I’m really wondering how it could have possibly received the grade of 9.8. Numerous spine ticks, pretty good wear on the upper left hand corner, and pretty severe wear around the staples. The book has definitely been around the block a few times. My question is, how does a newly printed comic with absolutely no noticeable flaws receive a grade of 9.8 while this comic with more flaws than I care to mention can also receive a grade of 9.8? Isn’t 9.8 more or less a mint comic? This Daredevil #160 is not mint. I have comics that have graded around 9.0 and 9.2 that look far more nicer than this 9.8. Are the graders at CGC receiving proper training prior to letting them grade comics?IMG_5311.thumb.jpeg.ade942b6bbf773336435df828d7fb43b.jpeg

For recently graded comics, including this one, CGC now has hi-res images on their cert page.  I checked this one and I agree the 9.8 is questionable except for the spine corner wear, which is usually attributed to production bindery issues and not counted against 9.8s and below.

but I assume the spine stress lines have the biggest negative impact on the grade.

I think the staining and wear probably had the biggest impact.  CGC really, really hates stains.  Spine stress lines are so common that you routinely see them in all the high CGC grades, fewer and fewer as the grade increases, of course.

Edit: Also, that long, vertical crease along the spine in the purple box probably had a big impact, too.  That would probably be classified as a reader's crease, not spine stress lines, which are horizontal.

Um, how many warning signs do you want listed, lol?

Ok, my reply was a bit flippant, and since this is the newbie section, here are the warning signs I found:

    1. Zero feedback seller.

    2. One poor picture of a very expensive item.

    3. Seller says it is a graded CGC comic, but no slab is evident in the picture.

    4. Seller provides a CGC cert number, which is indeed an AF 15, but the books don't match.

    5. Seller's book has "NOT FOR RESALE" and "SPIDER-MAN COLLECTIBLE SERIES VOLUME 1" on the front cover, which is not on the original.

Thanks for that insight @Tom789 - there aren't any color breaking creases, so I guess it's fiber breaking? could the fiber breaking be caused by the press? (The book was brand new, unopened when I sent it in)

A bad press with misplaced protection could possibly do that, yes.  By unopened, I assume you mean a poly bag.  I don't have any experience with comics in those bags (I'm an old-timer :preach:) but I've heard they can produce such creases.

I wanted to call out how great @CGC Mike and @MattM CS were during this process. I received the book with the updated label today, a mere 10 days after the initial request for the change - really appreciate the speed on resolving the label issue - thank you!

    https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4338279002/

That said, I'm still not particularly happy with the grade: it got bumped to a 9.6 from a 9.4, but the graders notes indicate 'light creasing to cover' - this is exactly the type of notes that should not happen with books that have been pressed, especially by CGC.

Unless I'm missing something, 'light creasing to cover' is precisely the reason people send books in to be pressed in the first place, and pay money to have resolved; so either CGC's pressing is really not up to par, or there is no review of the books between pressing and grading stages that would catch resolvable issues.

In theory, if I wanted to see if I could get the bump to the 9.8, my only option is to send it back to CGC, since CGC does not allow 3rd party pressers to crack SS slabs. But why would I do that, knowing that the book has already been pressed by CGC and they were unable to resolve the issue? (rhetorical)

I believe a "crease" in CGC's eyes is either color-breaking or fiber-breaking and is not fixable with a press.

I have had about 400-500 9.8's, from Bronze, Copper, and Modern submissions. I never got notes, to my knowledge, on even a single 9.8. Maybe not even a single 9.6. I have heard of people getting notes on 9.8's. Very rarely, though.

To get a large percentage of notes on 9.8's via multiple submissions is an anomaly. It certainly could suggest some type of inside collusion.

    Will we ever know?

    No, not a chance.

In my opinion, with no hope of ever knowing, it becomes a moot point. Interesting, maybe troubling, but fruitless.

    I've submitted 180 books and received 26 9.6s and 21 9.8s.  I've gotten grader notes on four 9.6s and one 9.8.

  7. I just noticed in CGC slab I got back about a month ago that the inner well is not sealed on the right edge at the top.  It's about an inch long where the top and bottom plastic appear to have been separated (or were never sealed).  I tried but failed to get a good picture of it.  I didn't find this on other slabs that I looked at.  I assume this is not proper.  Would it qualify as a Mechanical Error return this long after receipt?

Amazing Spider-Man #252 Marvel Comics May 1984 CGC 9.8 Near Mint + White Pages! | eBay, this one looked fishy to me. It does not match the picture on CGC.

I'm not convinced they're not the same book.  There are a couple of seeming discrepancies, possibly because they are different photos, but some things line up exactly:

    1. Staple positions and wear are the same.

    2. The slant of the Marvel logo box is the same relative to the top edge.

    3. The cut along the edges relative to the artwork look identical.

    4. There is a cb spine tick in the same place left of the girl's right arm.

I am not the right person to answer that question since I don't make it a habit to submit books. I only do it as part of signature series or if I think it will get a high grade, or if I want to solidify a pedigree. Because I just don't have the space for that many slabs in my home, it's crazy how quickly a long/short box fills. And I personally preffer the look of my books in mylars. So while I do own several slabs, the majority are books I bought and not stuff I sent in. And funny enough, some of the slabbed books I bought I removed from their slabs.

But none of that is meant to judge in any way, it's just to explain where I'm coming from with slabbing. And I was just curious about your pick.

Turns out you and I have a lot of the same books. I am really curious to see if those two yellow costume Daredevil books you sent ever go up in value. I know I love them and think they are underappreciated.

I'll definitely agree with you on how much room these slabs take up!  I keep some books in raw with no intention of slabbing them, such as a raw Carl Barks ducks collection I started recently.

Grats!  You beat me out on that one.  Only two 9.8's, so these 9.6's usually have stiff competition.

I'm a bit confused, why would the back cover be detached but not the front cover? And was anything detached when initially sent?

Also, for that book, any detachment would lower it much more. The 8.5 does not account for any detachment, it is for the creasing and spine stress.

And can you post a picture of it being detached because I don't see that in the images provided by CGC.

Here is the one picture I took before submitting.  The second picture shows what I call the same defect in a different book except on the front cover.  There is a flap that has "popped" between the staple ends. The cover on the other side does not have the flap.

What year was the book published?  Also can you clarify - if back cover is detached at the bottom staple, wouldn't the front cover have to be too?

Here's the cert - Verify CGC Certification | CGC (cgccomics.com).  The front cover is definitely attached, or at least it was when I submitted it.  I think it's called a popped staple, or partial detachment.
