  1. Which Planet is this one in? It's very similar to the letter that ran on the cover of some Dells in July 1945 (and quite a few other magazines as well): Incidentally - great idea for a thread Marty. (thumbs u
  2. If I remember to how to sum an infinite series, they should charge $91.67 and be done with it. Edit: Or I could just divide 88 by 0.96
  3. I didn't know this one existed until recently - and then a gorgeous copy bobs up on Heritage.
  4. Holy mess... And that one's right up there too. Note to self: buy cool books like these.
  5. Ah yeeeah...ah yeah...das'du stuff! + several googleplex - that's one desirable funny book!!
  6. Thanks everyone. It'll be some time before I have the book in hand, but I'll likely crack it and scan it when I do, so you should see it again. Perhaps. I have one in the 70s (number escapes me for now) that presents as well from the front but has a 15mm edge tear on the otherwise lovely back cover. Gotta love those $$ reducing defects that don't take much eye appeal off. Interesting. Yes, it is from that collection, but I knew nothing at all about it, so thanks for filling in the gap.
  7. Just picked up this one in the the Heritage weekly. Love these beautifully presenting mid graders.
  8. While I have mixed feelings about strong duck prices, it would be a shame if such beautiful books had gone for a song. Wonder if we'll see any of them here?
  9. Could be - Heritage sold a complete set around 2006 (before I knew ha.com existed ) for some piddling amount. It's entirely likely that I picked the worst time in human history to collect these.
  10. Amazingly, that's a really good question Peter. You made me pull out a few and take a look. It turns out that the first 8 have identical backs - because the comic story extends to the back page. After that they are different. Here's the NZ #9 (upper) and Australian #10 (lower): So, for 1 - 8 it's only the staple (and the tiny indicia on p4) that's the diagnostic feature. The backs of the Australian ones from #9 up vary, and but are always a Mobil ad. Here's two more (#22 and #23): For completeness, I should mention that half a dozen issues were reprinted in NZ in 1984. They're the same size and format, but they have 8 extra pages of puzzles in the middle and - more importantly - a different Mobil logo on the cover, and a Pan Am (remember them?) ad on the back:
  11. I said here a while back that I was chasing a grail which no one else would care about. Well, here it is: This is the last of 24 of these 1964 giveaway comics I was after. #9 is by far the toughest book in the run. I've seen two in ten years of looking. The other one I lost after placing a snipe that I thought was 4x FMV - only to not even be the underbidder. I bought my first few in 2003 and thought this would be quick. There were sets printed in Australia and New Zealand. The NZ issues are stapled, and have different ads on the back. The #9 above is a NZ issue. Here's a couple more: There were 17 duck books (10 pagers from WDC&S cut down to fit the format - there's about 7 pages in total so some editing was needed), 6 MM and an adaptation of Sword in the Stone. Here's an inside page from #9, with typical Australian colouring: . I'll post a group shot when my camera batteries are recharged. Oh, yeah.
  12. I didn't really need an upgrade to my Pogo #3, but this beautiful file copy was too good to resist. Love me some Racine Wisconsin stamping. Great back cover gag too.
  13. Nice books Andrew, great pick ups, blah blah blah This grail of yours interests me though. How can I help? PM sent
  14. Months after buying them, I finally got these in hand. Very pleased with how they present for their mid grades. They're both tight to the staple(s) too. This week on ebay Australia there's an absolute duck grail of mine coming up... (No one else here will care. )
  15. I just discovered the existence of another couple of War Bonds covers this week: Super Comics #74 and 86. Now I have to find them... But for now, I'm officially excited to add this one to the collection.
  16. With this, I'm getting close to all of the GGA Wings covers. My wife tells me that Jungle Comics must be next. I hear and obey.
  17. Why did you try?? Magnificent book!
  18. A wealthy industrialist's mysterious last utterance on his deathbed was "2/4". Despite the best efforts of a crack investigative journalist, no one ever discovered what it meant. It turns out that it was the arrival data pencilled on the back of the comic book he loved most as a child, and which reminded him of his carefree days before the world of big business. Oh, yeah, spoilers if you haven't seen Citizen Kane.
  19. I don't always quote images - but I'll make an exception for that one! I hope you find one that suits to add to the group. But a shot of 7 is awkward, so you'd better make it two.
  20. Yep, $100 in 1945 is almost $1,300 now. Not too hard to see why those bonds are hard to come today - plenty of incentive to trade them in.
  21. Ooo, a club I can join. (Cue Groucho Marx...)
