  1. Mike, I don't want to talk you out of getting the Star Wars slabbed but I don't see the valuation @ 8.0/8.5 . When you check prices on E-Bay, make sure you looks at SOLD prices. Some random issue numbers I checked prices for.... Star Wars #9 CGC graded 9.4 Value 45.00 , 8.5 Value, maybe 35.00 . Star Wars #50 9.4 Value 20.00, 8.5 maybe 15.00 .
  2. IMO, I would prescreen @ 9.4 . The fact that you prescreened @ 9.0 and only one passed shows you need to learn to grade a bit better.
  3. Normally, I would agree with you but SC22 goes beyond the normal limits of patience. I did not get involved in this last round but, in the past, I have tried politely to get SC22 to calm down, take a step back, take a sabbatical, etc. Even discussed it with him in a PM. He thinks he is within his rights to say anything, no matter how distasteful. He makes rude remarks about women, marriage, non comic related stuff. If he wants to be a part of this community, or even society in general, he needs to recognize there are boundaries.
  4. There is a difference between a smell and a stink. I love the smell of an old comic but have encountered some comics that stunk so bad I didn't want to be near them. A comic that got wet and dried out can even develop mold. IMO, a book that smells like smoke should not be kept or collected. It contaminates everything close to it.
  5. In my experience CGC will not answer these types of grading questions over the phone. The answer has always been, send it in. Never hurts to try though.
  6. I had a couple posts removed from this thread ? I answered the OP first. I basically said the same thing as Artboy. Is this a controversial topic or something, MODS ???? Here's what I said..... Welcome to the Boards Mike. Your question is too broad, it depends on what you are submitting. If you are submitting Moderns, most prescreen at 9.6, some even @ 9.8 . In general, the older the books, the lower the prescreen. Tell us what you are submitting.
  7. I like B&B 60, it's also a really cool cover, lots of black ink, hard to find in nice shape. However, I disagree on the comment that it may someday get the 1st appearance tag. I didn't see the debate but the fact that CGC has put 'Origin and 1st appearance of the Teen Titans' on hundreds of labels into the marketplace, how can that ever be undone ? Years ago, Overstreet could make the correction and all was well. Now you have CGC and whatever it says on the CGC label rules.
  8. Great book and I'm on board with the date stamps. Don't like them handwritten but love them when stamped.
  9. That copy is incredible. Maybe the BEST I have ever seen. The colors really pop. Excellent pickup.
  10. I like to let books come to me. Finally got a copy of this.
  11. Thanks. Years ago, I submitted the Bethlehem copy but it only graded 7.0 .
  12. Happy to get this today. Believe it or not, it's not common in high grade. The census for 32 is exactly 1/4 of Showcase #30 .
  13. What's with the price on WW 303 in 9.6 ? Did the book just get hot or something ?
  14. A service where you can select the minimum grade for them to process the book. Rejects get billed @ something like 5.00 each, maybe 6.00 now.
  15. Welcome to the Boards Mike. Your question is too broad, it depends on what you are submitting. If you are submitting Moderns, most prescreen at 9.6, some even @ 9.8 . In general, the older the books, the lower the prescreen. Tell us what you are submitting.
  16. Good example. Besides the smeared date, this book has all the telltale signs of a very bad press. The right side fanning in conjunction with that upper right corner not lining up is a classic tell.
  17. Sorry to hear that. Keep us up to date. Good luck.
  18. It sounds like you are only asking these questions to increase the valuation of the book. In that case, do whatever. If you care about the book, leave it alone.
  19. I'm pretty sure that's a missing piece on that corner.
  20. Terrible. That is no longer a 9.8 . This looks like a 1st generation of the new holder which used pressure to hold the book in place. Look at the fanning on the bottom edge of the book. I believe what is happening here is the cover is 'sticking' to the front while the rest of the book is shifting down. Unfortunately, this will get worse if the book is stored vertically. I would store the book horizontally to alleviate the pressure from gravity. I would advise contacting CGC but you will probably lose the 9.8 grade. Sorry.
  21. Speaking of inks, another telltale sign of an overzealous press is the smearing of writing on older comics, date arrivals, date stamps, etc. I hate that look.
  22. Agreed but looking at a scan vs in hand can sometimes be a big difference. The CVA sticker, in theory, gives you that 'thumbs up' in hand. I don't think it's adds any value = I wouldn't pay a premium, but it may put me over the edge when I am on the fence. I like it
  23. I liked Tomis also. I was sad when he left Comiclink. However, I think there is value to the CVA sticker for a buyer, especially with the Comiclink model. Since Comiclink does not show you the back cover, this sticker assures me that all is well. I also think there is precedence in card grading, don't some card grading companies have an eye appeal rating ? Edit: Just read Roy's comments above which echo my statements. Sorry for the redundancy.
  24. Joey, indeed good info. Just wanted to mention that I, for one, appreciate when you contribute to threads about pressing. IMO, pressing should be done by a professional, not an amateur. The marketplace is full of examples of all the characteristics you mention above, most likely the result of amateurs thinking that owning a press is all you need to do. Some Boardies get bent out of shape when discussions about pressing are brought up. It's like you can't say anything bad about pressing. However, as a well respected Boardie and a professional in the pressing arts, you add validation and insight to these discussions. Thank you !!!
