  1. With a proper buffer, I will stack a couple 25 lb weights on the book. Most often, it works really well. Brings a smile every time !
  2. Good question, I didn't want to elaborate in the post and couldn't think of a better word. What I had in mind is light, non coloring breaking folds and bends. Something that can be pressed out without the use of extensive heat and hydration. I've seen 'proper' 9.0's turned into 9.6's, amazing results. However, trying to take a 9.6 with a deep spine tic and pressing the spine into a communion wafer to get a 9.8 is not, IMO, proper.
  3. If they are indeed high grade, then grade them. But that's the rub, you have to be sure. My advice, get a CGC membership and use your free credit to get a few graded and see what happens. If they don't grade out like you thought, you have not wasted a lot of money.
  4. Good post ! The ship has sailed, pressing is acceptable and an integral part of the business. I have always said, from day one, that a proper press to a 'proper' flaw, done by someone that knows what they are doing, is fine. However, in the past 10 years we have seen the proliferation of amateur pressers, using aggressive techniques, attempting to go beyond what most consider a normal press. This is why I still participate in these discussions. I'm not against pressing, I'm against bad pressing.
  5. I recently went through a couple long boxes of OO stuff, circa mostly 80's, all Marvel with the flimsy paper stock. Most of the books were unbagged and the pages were much too toasty for me. However, about 10% were in plastic bags and the pages were gorgeous. The bags were really old and yellow to the point that you could hardly see the title of the book, old produce bags but taped shut, no boards. The cover colors on the bagged books were also excellent, really popped. The morale of the story, any kind of storage to keep the air out, even the worst type possible will help.
  6. Hope the return goes smooth, just say the items were not as described. To enhance your grading skills, try following the Please Grade My Thread, known as the PGM thread here on the Boards. To be honest, with the pics often supplied on E-Bay, it is difficult to see certain flaws and most stated grades are usually exaggerated. So purchase mistakes will still happen but it helps to be able to ascertain grade yourself.
  7. Nice looking book, congrats. This is a tough call. I may be wrong but it looks like there was previously tape all along the spine that was removed. There is a faint trace, more visible in the gray area, that is a very light brown running parallel to the spine. The spine is obviously laden with deep creases and there is a book length reader's crease near the spine. The spine roll doesn't actually look that bad. I just don't think that flattening out the spine will improve the grade but since it was mentioned in the CGC notes it obviously mattered to them on determining the grade. I think it's worth a try but If you send it in to be pressed make sure you purchase the evaluation service.
  8. Without seeing the book, I would hesitate to give advice. As a 2.5, the book is very low grade and may not be able to handle a press. Staples may pop, cover may become detached, chips may break off, etc. Also, fixing the spine may not improve the grade at all. Let's say you have a large piece missing holding it to 2.5. A straight spine will not overcome the grade degradation of the missing piece.
  9. I don't believe you got what you paid for. These are not Near Mint. Get your money back. Sorry.
  10. I agree . From what I heard, it was some sort of concession in the early start up days of CGC, when they were taking input about their proposed grading 'standards'. I think some otherwise high grade pedigrees, like Church copies, had some of this minor type of resto and collectors were nervous. Supposedly, this is only given to books that did not benefit, grade wise, from the CT. Looking at your example, there is an upper right FC corner chip that holds the book at 8.0 . The minor CT would not have improved the grade, hence Blue Label. Crazy.
  11. I don't care about the extra stuff either but I'm not sure what kind of 'tip' would help you. The con is mostly the other stuff, no way to avoid it.
  12. I don't think they simply reholder with a new label, I was under the assumption you must get it regraded. The reasoning being they have to inspect it again to decide. I'm not sure about this but I thought I heard it somewhere. Regarding the cover cleaning, again, I would think they need to see it as there is no broad stroke answer.
  13. Cool books but you can't make this offer, it's against Board Rules. You cannot request the Paypal gift on the Boards.
  14. The FF 52 CGC 9.2 White in the ComicConnect auction sold for 9,200 tonight. Though most of these record prices will not be in GPA, this book is on fire.
  15. When I can find something. I let the books come to me, I don't chase. You ?
  16. I'm generally working on a hangover every other day. Can't do two days in a row ! Maybe we will see you at C2E2 ?
  17. Yes, the DR. has a good eye. The erasure is going to cost the grade more than the pen line would have. CGC does not like loss of color. Actually, I don't either. I wish Phil luck, but I think it will be a 5.5 .
  18. I agree this is SCS, however, you do not want to send this to anyone but CGC. I think even Joey would agree that the book needs to be seen by CGC, in the holder. CGC is very good about accepting responsibility and making things right. However, if anyone else opens this slab, they are no longer involved.
  19. This is classic SCS (Shaken Comic Syndrome). It probably occurred during shipping. The Bank Vault did not cause it and it was probably like that when you got it. Arrange to send this book back to CGC, in the slab. Call first and get a name so you can put an attention on it. You will have to fill out a CGC form so they have something to track it by. DO NOT OPEN THE SLAB. DO NOT give it to another presser, you only want CGC to open this. They should be able to press it and regrade it.
  20. That's a great copy of this book. Love the old label goodness. However, I don't understand the point of making this video. The record sale would have been noticed without this video. It's just pure bragging and could be counter productive. Nobody likes to listen to somebody brag. It's obvious Vinnie loves the spotlight.
  21. You are definitely in the right here ! Your story about the encounter with Paradise at the con was shocking. Unbelievable that they are that much in denial.
  22. The date on the comic(not the date stamp) is a couple months ahead of the actual date it hit the stands. This is normal. It's kind of like the 'sell by' date on food.
  23. Finally, someone who is stepping up and doing something. I applaud your effort and wish you the best of luck. Don't back down !
